I play World of Warcraft and the last time I participated in distributed computing projects was about 2-3 years ago on the Folding@home project. As you guys know, PS3 is going to try and flex it's processing power by participating in the FAH program come this winter.
Well, there is already a community of networked computers that can benefit the projects here at WCG. I am currently trying to encourage WoW players to participate in the WCG. This winter, Blizzard will be releasing its first expansion for WoW. It would be nice to see if each disc contained a copy of the WCG client along with a brief description of the program and it's benefit to humanitarian research projects. As there are a wide range of computer setups that fall above and below the benchmarks for the WCG client, I would suggest that the client defaults to snooze mode if the computer falls close to or below the benchmarks. Or simply advise the player to put the client in snooze mode while they're gaming. A brief perusal of older threads has revealed that some players have experienced a drop in computer performance while the WCG client was in the background. Performance improved when it was subsequently placed in snooze mode. I believe that there can be an opportunity to exploit some synergy between games like WoW and the WCG. In WoW, whenever a player logs out of the game, his character gains "rested experience points". When the player logs back in much later, he can double the rate in which he gains more points. Essentially this allows him to level his character faster until he runs out of the rested experience points. Currently the player can increase the rate at which he earns this exp by logging out at an Inn. Plus, there is a limit to how much total rested xp it can earn. I propose that if a player earns a modest amount of Work units for the WCG project in a month then, that player can earn a bonus to the rate of rested exp earned for one month. I have some other ideas as well but that's not all that relevant now especially in this forum. I just feel that there is a huge opportunity to expand the network by working with gaming companies like Blizzard. With significant issues presented (and perhaps misrepresented) in the media by the likes of Jack Thompson and news stories highlighting real problems like internet addiciton, gamers are becoming marginalized into a cult sect of secluded ne'er-do-wells. Well now, gamers can play responsibly by participating in WCG projects and make a significant effort in the fight against AIDS and Cancer as well other problems facing humanity. Currently, I'm working on a small level by just posting on my gaming forums with folks I have played with and on the official off-topic & server forums for WoW. I ask that other gamers do the same for their community and look for my thread on WoW's off-topic forum, "How to serve Mankind" - a title that i made with tongue in cheek as it may get bumped by folks making inane comments and such. But as long as people see it, then that's great! |

Malvicus,
The gaming community owns some serious computing power and it would be nice to have more gamers participating in WCG. Your idea regarding extra experience points in WoW is excellent! It may be easier to implement than you think. WCG publishes member credits/points statistics in XML format, anybody who wants to download those stats from WCG can do so. For example, third parties like http://www.boincstats.com download the stats and provide sig banners that show point stats for individual members and teams. Members can use those banners in their sigs if they want and you will see many such banners in the forums here. Getting and using the stats is easy. I think Blizzard could implement your idea using the stats WCG already offers. The stats are free, btw. WCG provides 2 agents for crunchers to use: BOINC and UD. It sounds like you are familiar with UD (a.k.a the WCG agent) and are not aware of BOINC. I mention BOINC because the stats WCG provides to the public in XML format are stats for BOINC only, not for UD users. Therefore WoW players would want to crunch with BOINC rather than UD. Also, BOINC is open source software whereas UD is closed. The BOINC API (Application Programming Interface) may allow the programmers at Blizzard to obtain the points earned by crunching directly from BOINC rather than having to download them from WCG. Perhaps you could present the above information to Blizzard along with your other ideas. |

Hi Malvicus
I too am an avid online gamer and also leave Boinc running WCG in the background of my Linux Box. It doesn't interfere too much with my gameplay and is doing something good with the spare (not too many ) cpu cycles :-). I am playing Unreal Tournament 2003 all the time and rack up about 10 hours a day background crunching. I am also trying to convert as many people as I can to crunch but it's hard as gamers tend to squeeze every bit of use out of their machines. I am with you when you say that there is some serious power out there, as some people I play against have awesome machines just for gaming, such a shame they don't do more as you say for grid software bundled with games. I have a team called [L2G] Loyal To The Game Clan which is for Unreal and [L2G] Clan members. If you want to join the team ( the 2 of us need all the help we can get ) I am more than happy to change the team name to something more suitable to attract all online or offline gamers. If you would like to join let me know and also if any of you can help with a team name then feel free ( half card and dagorath join in if you wish ), but yes lets try and spread the word about this to the entire gaming community. Cheers Slapshot |

Awesome, guys. I was not aware that UD/BOINC issue. Thanx for letting me know. I'm sure that using BOINC would make it easier to integrate. I'm going to try and continue spreading the word. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of moving and my internet connection will be practically non-existent for a good while starting in september so I'm going to try and do as much as i can in the coming week. I'm glad you guys think this is a feasible idea.

As you guys know, PS3 is going to try and flex it's processing power by participating in the FAH program come this winter. yes . also note their GPU plans, beta release september.. etc "However, after much work, we have been able to write a highly optimized molecular dynamics code for GPU's, achieving a 20x to 40x speed increase over comparable CPU code for certain types of calculations in FAH. This means that we will be able to make an enormous advance over what we could do only just a few years ago. " from folding site... i hope wcg also gets the ability to use gpu etc to advance their projects... cheers... |
