Looks like Folding@Home are going to enable crunching on the PS3. Any idea if this will make it to WCG?

This comes up rather frequently.
The bottom line is modern consoles aren't (yet) powerful enough to make this worthwhile, and the architecture of consoles makes the work involved in porting the science applications to console platforms simply too difficult to be worth the effort. In the future, faster and more standard consoles, together with a standard platform (such as a Linux port that hides the architecture details) may make this a reality. But for now, Folding@Home are expending vast amounts of effort pioneering this. The rest of us are content to sit back and see how it turns out. |

The same objections apply. At the moment, we seem to be doing fine with conventional computer power, and the project scientists simply don't have the time to support every possible platform.
That doesn't stop us from discussing the subject every few months! Also, if a future project supported consoles or graphics chipsets, then I'm sure WCG would enable that for us. |

Stand Back, the PS3/GNU's idea as DC platform has found it's support @ RomWorld: BOINC and the gaming consoles
----------------------------------------A very common request we have from the community is to be able to run BOINC and various projects on a gaming console, whether it be the PS3, XBOX360, or Wii. As many have heard Folding@Home has announced that they have a client package for the PS3. This is great news for all distributed computing projects, personally I think this will begin the domino effect of having all the console manufacturers want to be able to support this kind of development. We had gotten some push back from one of the manufacturers about doing something like this at the begining of the year and since we had the stuff with the Climateprediction.net/BBC to do and then stuff with World Community Grid we decided to put the console issue on hold. We are almost done the the World Community Grid workitems and the Climateprediction.net/BBC stuff is already done. When Microsoft announced XNA Game Studio Express I applied to participate in the Beta. Now I need to get ahold of the SDKs for the PS3 and Wii. People should realize however, this is only half the battle. Once BOINC is ported, we'll have to get a few projects running on a console. This kind of adds another diminsion to the whole notion of console wars. I mean, can you imagine one of the administrative staff at a university getting a request to purchase 5,000 PS3s? I would really love to be in that office when that request hits their desk. ----- Rom BOINC | ClimatePrediction.net | World Community Grid Thursday, August 24, 2006 6:49:41 PM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)

From GridMeter: PS3 Grid
----------------------------------------August 24, 2006 PS3 Grid There was a recent posting to the Folding@home web site announcing the availability of a client for the Sony Playstation 3. This caught my eye as a potential embedded system early adopter of Grid. One could certainly argue about how "embedded" a hopped up game system with a cell processor is, but the point is not the size of the core, but the potential of what can be done with it. While yet another search for the cure to a disease or extraterrestrial life is not all that compelling from a computer science standpoint, these types of projects do get play in the popular press and create interest in Grid. Molecular simulations when the Playstation isn't serving media or playing games may very well lead to Grid enabled applications more closely associated with the Playstation's intended market. I still see media distribution and resource provisioning as a sweet spot for Grid. Posted by Greg Nawrocki on August 24, 2006 08:38 AM | TrackBack

Oh, if only! After all, a cure for extraterrestrial life is one of our top priorities. Where's Will Smith when you need him?

Just crossed an interesting article. I'm afraid is it is only on Dutch, but still.
A small summary: Microsoft's Bill Gates and Rosetta are in negociation to make distributed computing work on the XBOX360! http://www.powerweb.nl/nieuws.jsp?rubriek=423263&id=1971308 |

Funny is, that 78,9 % responds in a vote with 'far out' or 'the answer to many diseases', after which the first reply goes: "great, but the box makes so much noise, that I would not let it on just for crunching" ?!?.... WCG will surely look at it when it gets a project offered specifically designed on and for one of these consoles.... remember WCG hosts projects, does not make them!
