Perhaps you are only helping to find the next warlike aliens for us. There are no guarantees for who is out there. They can help us fight new wars and destroy the Earth. There will then be peace for the two people that are left, you and me. You can have the Old World and I will keep the New World. No problem.

Technology can be used for either peace or war. You do not say what you do yourself. I assume that it is something peaceful.

How far do you want to stretch the argument? Do not go to the circus, because elephants were used by Hannibal to invade Italy, of all places. The Autobahn and U.S. interstate highway system were both used to get military units to other places easily. Speaking of roads, the Appian Way is still there. The Caesars used it to march their troops quickly to points needed.

Railroads are used to transport heavy weapons, like tanks.

The military also had a camel corps in the southwestern U.S. Horses were used by the cavalry. Carrier pigeons were used to fly messages back to base. Dogs are used to patrol military installations, find land mines, and all sorts of military things.

You should not drive a car, because cars were used by General Pershing to invade Mexico to chase Pancho Villa.

You should not use paper, because it is used for secret formulas and to hold war plans.

You should not use money, because it can be used to buy weapons.

You should not use a microwave, because it uses the same technology as radar, invented for warships in World War II.

You should not drink water, because it is used in nuclear breeder reactors to make bombs. If it is a heavy water reactor, it takes even more energy to separate it from light water. Much of that is done at hydroelectric power plants.

Soldiers eat food so they have enough energy to attack the other side. Should you eat food?

Do not go to church. Religions start many wars -- against other religions, or even divisions of the same religions, or causing divisions.

Your Macintosh computer can be used to make blueprints for weapons.
Silicon computer chips are used for aiming guns, global positioning for smart bombs, etc. etc.

You should not swim in the ocean, because it can be used to float warships. Rivers and lakes are used for small boats and ships, paths for invasion. You should not breathe air, because bomber and fighter airplanes fly in it. You should not walk on the land, because army tanks travel on it. Fire is used for internal combustion engines for ships, tanks and warplanes. That does not leave much.

Again, the same items can be used for either peace or war. It is actually ALL items that can be used for either peace or war.

You are probably speaking either English or Italian, languages both used for war. I do not think any wars were fought in Esperanto. That language might be worth learning. That is about the only peaceful thing that I have come up with.

Differentiate technologies (research) themselves and the way of being used (politics). Whether grid computing is accelerating development of the technologies or not, someone will develop them in future with other ways.

Keep in mind surely some technologies have a possibility to be used in killing people, but others like this have one to be used to help them. Even in the case of medicine technology, we are benefited since it is we that will be given the medicine.

Everything is okay, if the technology is under control of users = if the politics is under control of civilians = if we are enough wise.
