shock Hi guys, I need some help...

I've just recently upgraded to a AMD AM2 4600+ dual core CPU and for some reason, its not using both cores and nor is it at 100% CPU load...

Can anyone give me some help as I might be able to use this PC to its full load? Well, sort of :)

I can put up a screen shot if required...

The UD agent is not designed to use both cores. Uninstall UD and install BOINC instead. BOINC can use up to 4 cores/CPUs.

Hello Phill23,
Here are instructions on how to change from UD to BOINC: http://www.unofficialworldcommunitygrid.com/toboinc.html

BOINC allows you to choose how many threads to run, up to the maximum number of detected cores. By default, it is ready to run on up to 4 cores.

Re: Hi guys, I need some help...

Good show, Phil! You've probably noticed BOINC has a few more settings to play with compared to UD. The setting "Connect to network about every X days" (on the website on the Device Manager page) is one that can get you into a bit of trouble, not system crashes or anything serious, just missed work unit deadlines. The default for that setting is .1 which works very well for most single core computers that are connected to the 'Net 24/7. You might want to boost that up a little since you have 2 cores, try .4. The higher the number the more work units BOINC will cache on your computer. Caching sounds like a good thing and it is if used wisely. Just be aware that if you cache too many work units and something goes wrong then you sometimes end up returning the results after the deadline. Keep in mind the deadline is 1 week. My advice is to raise the cache setting no higher than .8.

For reason, I've been using cache with a higher value.....on 2 projects, it 'managed' to run the last one thru just 1 hour before expiration. Now having let it alone for a few weeks, it's very dependable in estimating how much u can have in cache to never miss a deadline. BOINC 5.5.13 latest screamer official, not yet recommended version (5.6.x will be), is much better also at waiting for checkpoint saves before switching projects....never loosing a minute of crunch time.

Re: Hi guys, I need some help...

I had noticed that with the single core I have, the CPU was only used 50 to 60% with the world community grid. Now I've changed over the the Boinc one, it seems to be flying along at a 100% or as near as dang it ;)

I now have a AMD 64 3200+ for my server and a AMD X2 4600+ for gaming on :) Both have Boinc installed (well when I get the games pc running again.... motherboard problems :() and seem to be working fine :) Although I have noticed a bit of a slow down with it running at times, especially when running benchmarks etc...

Hi Phill

Yes the UD agent is throttled to 60% by default. You need to download another App. to adjust it. The BOINC agent runs at 100% by default.
Intel chips are manufactured with a 75% CPU load as their anticipated maximum useage. As this is their prime design parameter, they are supplied with heatsink and fan appropriate to this assumption. I'm not sure about AMD or others.

It's a good idea to watch your temperatures very carefully if using more than 70% CPU anyway.

Cheers ozylynx smile

Re: Hi guys, I need some help...

It's telling me its around 42C under a 100% load so I assume thats nothing to worry about :) Not bad for a £20 machine that's one thing I do know :)
