Re: How to assign differing machine profiles to different devices

Hello GWG,
It sounds as though you are drawing work units from other projects beside the WCG. In this case, you should record the project weights assigned to each project so that we can begin to work out just what the BOINC scheduling algorithm is doing. BOINC scheduling is very complex and non-intuitive.

Re: How to assign differing machine profiles to different devices

GWG,

It seems every week we see a post from someone who claims their work units are disappearing and BOINC isn't downloading new work when it should. We all know that it can be very confusing at first, many of us have been just as baffled as you. Given 2 weeks, almost every cruncher with your concerns says it's making sense and working fine.

Be patient. It's a little different here at WCG than it is at other projects but if you give it time you will find that each and every one of your work units gets counted. Keep in mind that the statistics on some of the WCG pages are updated every 6 hours. That means you might upload a result now but it won't show up on some pages until 6 hours later. The ONLY page that has up to the minute information on your work units is the Results Status page behind the Device Manager link on the My Grid page. Try keeping a list of the new work units as you receive them. Compare your list with the information in the Results Status page for a while and forget about all the other stats you see for now. Those other stats will only confuse you because they are not always up to date.

Regarding getting new work units.... BOINC does not always request a new work unit when it finishes uploading a completed work unit. Sometimes it waits for several hours before requesting more work. That is not a flaw, it is done that way to ensure that you never have more units than you can process prior to the deadlines for the units. That part of BOINC works very well and if you have a computer sitting there with no work unit then it is most likely you have not configured BOINC properly. If it has a work unit and simply not requesting more work then there is probably for a good reason. Just let BOINC handle the scheduling and resist the urge to do Resets.

Also, leave the "Connect to server every ..." setting in your profile at the default of .1. That setting is also called the "work cache setting". Trust me, do not adjust that setting above .1 or you may find things get even more confusing.
