When I joined this project, I allowed two different machines (a Mac G4 dual proc and a Windows XP using dual Athlon procs) to share the Default Machine Profile.
----------------------------------------One of the problems with this is that results seem to be combined in the statistics, and I don't want that. In fact I don't really like the web interface and wish that WCG server used the standard BOINC interfaces, like the three other projects I support. So, I created two new, differently-named Device Profiles, but cannot alter the devices to use them, rather than the Default Profile. When I bring up the Device Manager and select a machine to get the device configuration, the pop-up menu to select the Device Profile lists only the Default Profile, so I cannot alter the current assigned Device Profile. How to do this, please? George --------

BOINC is a bit less flexible for profiles.
----------------------------------------What about 2 different member names, with would have a separate profile for each? Statistics are gathered by membername, which would then be separate. You could also set up a team, joined by all members, to show overall effort....or all 2 join some other team. Perhaps you created UD profiles, not BOINC profiles. They are not compatible. You have to run one or the other interface. A dual core can run one of each if it wants to. It sounds like you could set up to 4 unique membernames and profiles if you wanted to, with two dual core machines available. In fact I don't really like the web interface and wish that WCG server used the standard BOINC interfaces, like the three other projects I support. That so far is a compromise, so it will support both the UD interface and the BOINC interface. Many other projects (I have run a few) are using the BOINC interface only.

Retsof, the way i red a new announcement last night, u can now assign projects on a 'per BOINC device' basis. hmmm. something new.In addition to the new Completed Research section, we've added the ability to select specific projects for BOINC Device Profiles. Now you can opt in and out of projects on the Device Profile level to further optimize/customize your contribution to the World Community Grid. Each computer can run a different project. I already take advantage of the "send other work" option. I set boinc to HDC for everything. The small computers can't handle it, so get FAAH to work on. Since he was complaining about statistics being lumped together, perhaps he needs more membernames.

I can't explain why the pop-up menu lists only the Default profile. If you have created the profiles then they should appear in the pop-up. As Retsof said, maybe you created 2 new UD agent profiles instead of 2 new BOINC profiles. Anyway, having a different profile for each computer will not separate the results. They will still be lumped together. |

Hello GWG,
differently-named Device Profiles BOINC has 3 profiles other than Default. They are Home, Work and School. As far as I know, only UD allows you to name new profiles arbitrarily. Edit the Home profile to be what you want, then assign it to your BOINC computers. Lawrence |

BOINC Device profiles got options to create home, school, work profile atop default profile, which can be assigned to each individual device...i'm doing it too. If wanting to have BOINCstats to read out split stats per device, not those at WCG, then indeed there is a need to have 2 member names.....maybe even 2 different email addresses....uncharted country for me.
----------------------------------------The 'give alternate work if none other chosen project available' is, i still think an unintended by-product to allow to let HDC go to a 750mb+ machine and FAAH to any other that has 512 using only 1 BOINC profile. With the 4 profiles, u can effectively assign to any machine very targeted projects i.e. a 750mb machine FAAH and a 750 mb machine HDC....this way your WCG device stats would tell u cumulative how much u have contributed to each project. Of course, would WCG start running 5 or more simultaneous, u'r buggered and have to compromise again. Here a print of my 'Home' profile ![]()

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I did indeed have a UD profile, but I don't understand the difference, since I am using a BOINC client and am collectiong BOINC statistics. I changed to a BOINC home profile, but cannot see any change other than the default profile is now home. The other UD profiles I created simply cannot be accessed for assignment.
----------------------------------------The reason for all this is that I have noticed that scheduling vis-a-vis the two machines is wonky. My ATHLON Duo has completed 9 WUs to 2 WUs on the Mac dual G4, even though I know that the Mac has been processing more than 2 WUs. Some appear to have been lost in the void. This morning, there are no WUs scheduled on the Mac even though there should be one, and the one that was being worked on yesterday has also disappeared. It was these observations that have led me to try to distinguish more carefully between the two machines. According to the BOINC message log, the previously-running task was reported as finished this morning at 08:08 my time (It's now 10:16 my time). The request succeeded, but then, instead of requesting new work from WCG, it requested new work from SZTAKI Desktop Grid, which didn't need new work. So, where has my WCG WU gone gone and how do I find out what its status is? Why won't the BOINC client on the Mac G4 request more work from WCG even when I do an update on the project? Any help would be appreciated. George ------

Apropos my last post. WCG update added the WU finished last night by the Mac G4, but still not requesting new work (10:55 my time). I did a Reset Project at 10:55, and immediately, BOINC Client requested new work and queued it.
----------------------------------------Still don't understand what is going on. PS: All my BOINC accounts have the same name. Not sure how that can be a problem, but then, I am grasping at straws. George ------

I still can't figure out what your problem is. Everything you describe sounds like things are functioning normally.
Device profiles are not intended for separating your statistics. You can't do this with any BOINC project. However, you can view each device's statistics anyway, no matter what profile you used. You may have problems if you used the same device name, but WCG should still list them all (you won't be able to tell them apart, though). You can track the progress of work units using the Result Status page. The algorithm used by BOINC to download work is complicated. Don't try to second-guess it when you try to force an update. It will download work when it is needed. I don't know what "standard BOINC interface" you are talking about. All BOINC projects use a website for changing your settings. |
