forcing boinc to use core 2 of a dual core all the time

forcing boinc to use core 2 of a dual core all the time

ive found through searcing that you can make it use 100% of each core but is there away to set it to use core 2 of a daul core so i can surf ect on the other core while maintaning 100% single core crunchage

Re: forcing boinc to use core 2 of a dual core all the time

CaddyLappy1,

for the moment u can do 2 things....@ WCG's BOINC device profile, set 1 processor...it will use 100% of 1 core, it will read in the taskmanager as overall 50%. If u want to do 2 simultaneous but at less than 100%, u can be patient until BOINC introduces the throttle function which is in some undefined schedule (at least not read anything definitive), or look up the Threadmaster Success Stories posts on this forum....works for me. By changing a percent in the registry, the next WU for the particular science will pick up to new desired value....no need to stop, boot or anything.

Each core will only do 1 WU. U cannot force a particular core to do 2 WU and the other reserved for anything else.....it's more efficient to set Threadmaster to do 50% for each science and use the spare power for whatever. If u said, use core 2, and reserve core 1 ....someone else may know how to do that.

I think TruXoft BOINC does that, if I understand the docs correctly. But I don't have a dual core to try it on so I can't say for sure. Yes, I know TruXoft BOINC is considered to be one of those SOB, bogus, cheatin' agents but if you configure it properly then it does not cheat. http://boinc.truXoft.com.

Yes.
1) You can go into task manager (ctrl+alt+del)
2) Find the WU process, and right click on it.
3) In the menu, select "processor affinity" - the last option.
4) This will allow you to see and change which core the process runs on - CPU 0, CPU 1, or both. (The number of cores start from 0, so it really is core 1 and core 2.)
5) Uncheck the core you want to reserve for your own usage and click OK.
6) Repeat this with any other work unit process running.
7) All the WU processes will run purely on the core(s) you selected, so in my case:

Core 1: 0% usage
Core 2: 50% usage for one WU, 50% usage for the other WU.

Because the second core is fully loaded, the system will make everything else run on the idle core, and that includes browsing, games etc.

This is a good way or running WUs while playing games without performance detriment, because unlike popular opinion, even if the WU is set to idle priority, it will still result in mometarily lower performance for a game which wants to use the core.

2 cores = 100%
1 core = 50%

The 2 WUs are runing each at 25% on the second core - total is 50%.
While the other 50% idle is the first core.

Re: forcing boinc to use core 2 of a dual core all the time

ok thank you i will try that - does this mean however that for each new unit i have to affiliate the unit to core 2 again ? i have tried it with the wcg client but on each new unit i had to re assign the core

thanks all for the replies and info

Yes, you will have to keep reassigning the core, until the client is upgraded.

Or you could find a programmer and get him/her to design a script that sets processor affinities of processors beginning with "wcg_" to core 1, and then put that script in startup.

It's pretty easy to change processor affinities, just quite some advanced coding and module calling, but I'm not a programmer.

Learning every day.......just a word of caution....make sure to read up on having 2 BOINC WU's process on 1 core.....they may interfere with each other causing results to be deemed invalid or with error.

Re: forcing boinc to use core 2 of a dual core all the time

cool i only want to run 1 instance but i want to be able to use my main pc as normal as well as keeping the results coming in. I have 2 other pcs doing it also and am about to upgrade one of them.

I'm just used to having it running on my main rig which was single core and having to wait on other apps ect. now i'm hoping to have 1 instance assigned to core 2 as explained and then fart about as need be surfing wise ect on the other core.

thanks for the explanations ppl :-)
