The Agent was working, as far as I could tell, normally yesterday when I closed it and other programs down to do some computer maintenance. This afternoon, all tasks start/restart/initialize without difficulty except World Community Grid's agent. When trying to open it, I receive the following error message:
Error occured while initializing the Grid Agent = -204 Although not unfamiliar with "computer basics," I am by no means adept enough to solve this problem. Does anyone have a solution? Should I uninstall/reinstall the Agent or is there another, less traumatic method which should be employed? Thank you for any help. Metaleather |

maybe you can go to task manager and end any wcg and ud stuff, then try restarting it.

There may be an easy fix for your problem with the UD agent, I am not sure, I'll let others more qualified help you with that. If it does boil down to uninstalling UD then you might consider migrating to BOINC. It provides better error reports and has log files. The announcement from WCG today saying that BOINC users can now select the projects they want to participate in on a per device basis removes one of the few advantages UD had over BOINC. Plus BOINC receives updates from an active development team whereas UD hasn't been updated for some time and seems like it may never be updated.

even if UD is not updated, it works very well.
that boinc stuff looks like 'too much information' for a non-technical user. |

Aye, UD does work well and it's all some folks need. The fact that 85% of WCG's work units get processed under UD says a lot.

Thank you both halfcard and Dagorath.
I tried the Task Manager option and the Agent now seems to functional. I'll bear the BOINC suggestion in mind, and may migrate back to that. I have other projects running on BOINC and like it's interface. I ended up on WCG sort of by default. The original FAAH project/(team?) to which I belonged sent out a notice that members needed to install WCG. I, being the good little sheep, did as directed. While I don't want to separate from that original team, I do have a decided preference for the BOINC interface, (it's my "engine of choice" for all my other DC projects except one.) Thanks again for your help, Metaleather |
