Can the files which the server send be compressed (not "archived") ?

Hello all,

One member of the team I belong said to me that whether files which have to be downloaded to our computers couldn't be archived or not.

Since he connects to the Internet with dial-up, downloading several MBs files must be troublesome.
Probably other participants have the same suggestion, too. Are there some facts that prevent the server from treating archived files? confused

Thanks for reading,

@Sekerob: Thank you very much for your helpful intruction

Re: Can the files which the server send be archived?

Suguruhirahara,

UD Agent i think already uses 'Compressed' file transmissions. BOINC Agent from 5.5.6 seems already to have the capability, but WCG will have to tell when they're going to use it.

ciao

PS, take a complement when its meant and it was meant :>)

Re: Can the files which the server send be archived?

BOINC automatically archives according to the communications setting. If you communicate with the server once every 2 days (rather than the default 0.1 day) the BOINC client will draw enough work units to last 2 days (we call that caching) and will archive (store) the results and then send them back together after 2 days. The UD client does not behave this way, but there is an add-on program called UD Monitor that can archive work units and results in slots that many people on dialup use.

Re: Can the files which the server send be archived?

Hi, suguruhirahara.

"Archive" is a confusing word to use here, because it means "keep a permanent record".

Sekerob thought you meant can the files be compressed so they can be downloaded more quickly. UD does this, and some of the projects do with BOINC, but not all of them.

Lawrence thought you meant can more work units be stored (cached) on your computer so you don't need to be connected to the Internet all the time. BOINC does this, but not UD.

Thanks for replying,

Point taken. there I meant compression of files, so that each host can download files quickly, regardless of connexion types from DSL to Dial-up.

Thanks for reading.

edit: I changed the title of this thread.
