confused Agent startup behavior

For some odd reason, my machine always starts all the applications in my "Startup" folder twice. I have several machines and I see this behavior on all of them. The Windows agent doesn't always handle this situation well -- two instances of the program starting up at about the same time. One reports the duplication but the other fails to initialize. So, fairly frequently, I have to restart the agent manually. Needless to say, if I also frequently see that it is not running after some fairly long period of time. Could application startup collision detection be improved to prevent this?

Re: Agent startup behavior

Best to find out how/why it is starting more then once.

Use MSCONFIG (START-RUN-"MSCONFIG")

This will show you everything that starts up.

Look in "services" to see if you have installed as a service.

Look in "Run" for duplicates - this includes the start menu and Registry run items.

Re: Agent startup behavior

One of the causes of having double Start-ups, if the programs allow at all, is if one changed from All Users Menu to Individual Menu option. If u seek out in Explorer, under Admin rights the various AutoStart folders in the different profiles, u may discover one or more may exist under All Users and under the Personal profile menu. Normally the entries in All Users should appear under any user signing-in. The one mentioned by Dirk, having installed BOINC as a service, but also put as shortcut in the Startup Profile causes it too.

In my case, can start it regular, then start it again under same user.....maybe it was designed to allow it as a workaround, one having admin rights on BOINC, the other just as viewer.....at least if i start a second session (my Work Profile, no admin right), i cant do anything but look how BOINC is doing.

WCG has no grips on BOINC double application detection other than communicating with Berkeley BOINC developers......doubt it's considered a problem.....757,170 registered world wide using BOINC on different projects.....i'm ranking 129365 at the moment on the Global x-project scores ;>) http://nl.boincstats.com/stats/boinc_user_sta...=129300&to=100#129365
