Network Bandwidth being consumed

I have several systems on a small network running WCG which has generally worked pretty well for the last few years. In the last few weeks I have had three different systems take up almost all of my 6Mb bandwidth leaving very slow response on other systems. Pulling the ethernet plug on the offending system frees up the bandwidth allowing normal work on other systems. The only thing running on the offending systems would have been WCG in screensaver mode (no one using the system). I didn't find anything in FAQ addressing this issue, but if I have had three systems in the last few weeks I suspect others may be running into this issue also. Unfortunately, pulling the plug is not the optimum solution since I am willing to share free cycles with WCG projects. Perhaps this program runs like Windows...where you should expect the need to uninstall and reload it every couple years to keep it running?

Which agent are you runing? Both the UD and BOINC agents have likely been upgraded several times since you started crunching. It would be a good idea to install the newest agent found here http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewJoinNow.do No need to uninstall, just install the new ones overtop the old ones.

Also, can you also tell us if this was upload or download and what project (HDC or FAAH) you were working on when you noticed this action?

ckretzma: We have noticed that a few machines are uploading more data than needed when the work unit has aborted in some unusual manner. We have not been able to reproduce this by killing the research process, or making the machine run out of memory or disk space. Other machines processing the same work unit don't ever seem to have a problem. We are wondering if there might be some new windows configuration item (like DEP) or some new firewall / antivirus / antyspyware product feature which causes these unusual work unit terminations which somehow make the UD agent return extra large amounts of data. If you see this happening again, do you have a way of finding the particular machine doing it and checking on it to see if it has any problems and what kinds of firewall... products might be running on it? Perhaps an overnight run of a memory and cpu checker might be good also: using tools found here. Please send me the device ID of the machine (see preferences window - checkmark icon) in question and the time at which it happened so that I can check what it has returned. Thank you.

Re: Network Bandwidth being consumed

ckretzma, if reading your post correct, these 3 machines eating your 6mb bandwidth continuously, u might have been discovered by some zombie-bot planters, them now participating in spreading spam or partaking in DDOS attacks....not-used machines are the ideal condidate the filth of the internet seek out to employ....hope not, but would run some serious sleuthing software on those boxes, also because it sounds like they might not be up-to-snuff in MS patching

Re: Network Bandwidth being consumed

ckretzma, if not zombies, bots or trojan virusses, u might consider switching from UD agent to BOINC, which allows the remote viewing of all your machines progress.....the answer could come out of this thread...restricting Agent Bandwidth.... Profile Upload/Download speed values

That is an excellent suggestion. I will reload the agent and try again.
