Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

As far as hardware goes most of the BOINC client computers are MPC clientpro machines that are 18 months old or less. They come with an Intel based on-board graphic cards. There seems to be no other correlation between hardware and the number of errors returned, but I am looking at +1500 pages of data on the stats page.
When I look at the grid statistics the problems begin appearing on ~ 10/5 even on machines that were working without issues up to that point. Brand new MPC clientpro 375 machines (with new drivers) are showing high error rates as well. It might be useful if we were able to disable the graphic screensaver.
Intel on-board graphic cards are not well known for exceptional 3d acceleration, and it seems that they may be having a problem with one of the new features in the BOINC screensaver.

Thanks for your assistance in this matter,
-Melchior

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Simply change your screensaver to [none], or whatever takes your fancy.

Do that, and the graphics code will never run unless you use the "view graphics" button.

I agree, errors such as these could easily be caused by your graphics hardware. You could try disabling acceleration in display properties.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

We run the client as a system service so that even when the users are logged off the client runs. As a result the screensaver for the login screen is the BOINC client screen. We are working on altering the screensaver for the system service to something other then the BOINC client. We should just have to locate and modify the regkey that manages the system service screensaver if it exists.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

These 2 Q & A's relating to the graphical interface and the global preference override.xml file integration will be of interest to ya'll.
Head over to the full Q&A at Rom World here: BOINC Q&A -- 27/10/2006

Will a future BOINC have an interface tab or an options extension or the like to set any of the 'override' parameters?

I'm not sure what you mean by override parameters. If you are referring to the global preferences then yes, the manager will include the ability to override the global preferences. That feature will first make it's debut with the BSG with a small subset of the overall features, probably within a release after that I'll add the rest of the global preferences to an enhanced preferences dialog which will be available through the advanced interface.

Currently the simple preferences dialog looks like this:

To be fair though, I just got done butchering everything on Friday to take care of a usability issue and WCG hasn't had a chance to give me an updated bitmap and that is why you can see the magenta border. The general layout is there though, it should look pretty intuitive on how it should work.

Everybody should feel free to provide any first impression feedback, we are all interested in what you all have to say.

any update on new BOINC client interface? can anyone sign up for beta testing?

Well for the last several weeks I've been saying we will hit beta this week. So without further ado, we'll hit beta this week. Kevin and I will probably chat tomorrow and decide what to do. My new target date for a beta release is Wednesday.

Like with all of our beta releases they are available for those who really want to try things out, just be advised that beta releases have bugs and things may not work. In the worst case scenarios' their could even be data corruption.

BOINC Simple GUI is in Beta

Hurray, the BOINC Simple GUI was released for Beta testing today.

I'll update the BOINC site tomorrow describing how to create a skin for those who want to play around with them.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

It doesn't seem to answer all the questions, though. The default skin was originally just a normal skin set, but now seems to be compiled into the executable.

I'm also unsure how skins will be deployed.

My biggest concern, though, is the i18n. Localised skins sound like an awful lot of work. Maybe I should learn the wxWidget way. We'll see how things develop.

On the plus side, WCG have put a lot of effort into the BSG, and have fixed a whole raft of minor issues that were uncovered in the first round of alpha testing. Kudos to the WCG team!

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Yep, been running it a wee bit..... there are no files to be found for the default BSG parts. There are 1 or 2 more prefs, that are not in the previous screenshots like a skin selection drop down box and the CPU usage. The BOINC "Advance View" as the interface it now called, has been glossed up to like tab highlighting and fancier pie charts for disk /project use.

The CPU trottle box......nowhere near how the UD agent works..... if u'd say 50%, it runs 30 seconds, then stops for 30 second.... that's how its described on BOINC dev. Make your own conclusions on the usefulness of that.

'Like the box where u can use to run on website profile or the local override.

Few bugs like the BSG message box wont fill, unless u first bring up the message tab in the AV of old BOINC. A few component do not seem to fit properly / run over borders. The 'Do work after idle for' should be grayed out, if the 'Do work while in use' is ticked.

Oh, and the various boxes could use some hover pop up messages to explain the function, otherwise looking virtually ready to rock and roll.

cheerio

PS the Windows benchmark was absolutely identical....there's no other OS version yet.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

The pie charts look very crude still, but no doubt they will improve.

Tab highlighting is done by the shell, I thought. It's present on 5.4.11 anyway, unless you mean something else.

Most of the controls should already have tooltips.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Tooltips in the main screen just repeat text of the field titles, but that's not the one i was aiming at... it's the Prefs settings screen.

On the front screen i'd change the "My Projects" line to "Projects of:" and then show the user ID... not sure if the repeat of the User ID when hovering the individual projects buttons has a function.... can the BSG run for multiple users simultaneous?

Afterthought... one of the screens might prominently show the device ID number....too much hidden in the message log.

Edit: Screenshot of HDC 5.14 WU in the BSG under 5.7.2 Alpha:
