Cancer project won't run om my MAC

Trying to run cancer research on Mac. When I go to the Boinc manager and hit projects, it's not there. Am also running Seti@home & Rosetta project on same manager. Is this interfering with the cancer project?

Re: Cancer project won't run om my MAC

The most common reason for not being able to run a project is not having enough memory. HDC needs 750MB. If you don't have that much, I hope you will stick around and donate some time to the other WCG projects.

Re: Cancer project won't run om my MAC

Rosetta and SETI are not interfering. Did you attach your Mac to WCG? In BOINC manager click Tools -> Attach to Project and then follow the prompts.

If you've already done that then in BOINC Manager you should see World Community Grid under Project where you already see SETI and Rosetta but you won't see Cancer project.

To crunch cancer work units you must login to the WCG website, go to the My Projects page off the My Grid page and make sure the Help Defeat Cancer Project is selected. Unlike Rosetta and SETI, WCG offers more than 1 project for you to participate in. You have the option of participating in as many projects as you like. You will see 4 projects in the list: Human Proteome Folding (HPF1), Human Proteome Folding 2 (HPF2), Fight Aids at Home (FAAH) and Help Defeat Cancer (HDC). HPF1 is finished, HPF2 is temporarily suspended until a bug is fixed, FAAH and HDC are active and have work units IF you meet the minimum system requirements for those projects.

But why? It never uses more than 234MB so why the **** does it need so much? I have a PC with 256MB in and would like to run it on this project, but it wont. I think thats a poor showing.

Re: Cancer project won't run om my MAC

Hello badanimal78,
HDC is unlike any of our other projects. The other projects use about the same amount of memory, occasionally spiking up 30 or so megabytes. HDC will sometimes spike up past 500 MB, using all of that in the working set. It also uses much more disk space than the other projects.

still pretty bad as most "branded" PCs only ship with 512MB, and even as low as 256MB.

Re: Cancer project won't run om my MAC

We have heard from the Community Advisors that the HDC project originally required a minimum of 1 GB RAM and that it took a lot of hard work to trim it down to 750 MB. I am sure the techs are aware most machines retail with 512 MB or less and I am sure they would love to have the project running on those machines as well if it were possible. We really can't expect them to dilute the science to suit you when there are plenty of 1 GB or better machines that can do the job properly.

Think of it this way... Every FAAH or HPF2 work unit you crunch helps free up a 750 MB machine to crunch an HDC unit. See? You DO contribute to HDC in an indirect way. Keep up the good work, badanimal78, the WCG team needs you and appreciates you.
