Why protease inhibitors?

Hi everyone,

While I am not an expert, I understand that protease inhibitors are being used less and less in favor of other drugs which work better and have less side effects, lilke reverse transcriptase inhibitors and, more recently, fusion inibitors (integrase inhibitors, if I remember correctly).

Also, common sense seems to suggest that stopping the virus from entering the T-cell could be more effective than trying to stop replication once it is in.

If that is the case, why are we still dedicating our efforts to protease?

Can anyone enlighten me?

A big thank you to everyone involved in this project, I love being able to contribute.

ciao,
Fabio

Re: Why protease inhibitors?

Hello fabulousfabio,
Here is a useful survey about AIDS drug research dated 25 Oct 2005 on Aidsmap: http://www.aidsmap.com/en/docs/1DADAB42-752E-4894-B0DF-91DFA3A38CC0.asp

If you follow up the related links, you will see that there is a lot of research for many AIDS targets. FightAIDS@Home is using distributed computing searching for protease inhibitors. Perhaps in time some of these other targets will also use distributed computing projects.
