Proposal for a New Grid Computing Project - SIFA@wcg

"Search for an IBM Forum Administrator@World Community Grid"

I realise that I haven't any friends at the moment at IBM but sometimes you have to make a sacrifice for the common good I will probably be cast out forever from this project it was good while it lasted - here goes.

The new project we should all get behind and dedicate our unused CPU cycles to is called SIFA@wcg which stands for the "Search for an IBM Forum Administrator@World Community Grid"

This would encourage all the users at SETI to come and join us as they are already accustomed to a thankless task and have endless faith that there's someone out there

N.B. IBM this information will soon be searchable on Google!

If this is my last post I wish you all the best

Dave

Re: Proposal for a New Grid Computing Project - SIFA@wcg

Have you read this

IBM's values state that we are committed to providing innovation that matters for our company and for the world. There is no better way for us to live those values than to join the World Computing Grid," said Stanley S. Litow, vice president of IBM Corporate Community Relations and president of the IBM International Foundation.

"We're taking IBM's innovative on demand grid technology - the same technology we share with customers - and applying it to humanitarian issues about which the world cares. We look forward to working with our employees, customers and the public to execute this exciting vision."

World Community Grid establishes a permanent, flexible infrastructure that will provide researchers with a readily available pool of computational power that will speed solutions to the most difficult problems. IBM has donated the hardware, software, technical services and expertise to build the infrastructure for World Community Grid and provides free hosting, maintenance and support

right that's the press release

What about making this a reality???

Re: Proposal for a New Grid Computing Project - SIFA@wcg

It is very simple. I am a researcher at a non-profit research institute. IBM has provided me with a computer I could never have afforded myself. Now I can solve problems and put the solutions in the public space. IBM requires that everything running on the grid be made public. I'm running right now (at the ISB), as soon as I can put the results up they will be public. IBM is also currently accepting proposals through a public and quite transparent RFP ... it is a reality ... mabey i'm not sure what you guys are asking, but it seems simpler that implied above...

Re: Proposal for a New Grid Computing Project - SIFA@wcg

My beef is with the last 2 items

maintenance and support

without these

this

a permanent, flexible infrastructure that will provide researchers with a readily available pool of computational power that will speed solutions to the most difficult problems

won't be around for very long

I think as a "readily available pool of computational power" we have been treated APPALLINGLY since the beginning of the project.

Hence my ironic suggestion that we launch SIFA@wcg to find an IBM forum administrator who quite obviously does not exist - part of the maintenance and support function IBM have set themselves up to provide - who would have deleted this thread immediately (not that I would have been forced into a corner to try poke IBM with this virtual stick if there was anyone responding to any of our requests in anything like a timely fashion)

Could you print this out and go back to IBM who are providing you with this free resource and campaign on behalf of your 25356 sponsors that we are treated with simple common courtesy by being responded to in the forum that they have provided.

rbonneau I really wish you all the very best in your honorable research.

Regards

Dave

David Autumns, have you thought yet of applying for a job with IBM? Once you are "on the inside" you could do everything better than they do now?

Hi Rose

They probably couldn't afford me !!!

Then my philanthropic donation of my time and number crunching power wouldn't be Phil, Ann or Thropic

Keep crunching and I'll keep pushing on to win us a great World Class Forum - with a lot of help from my friends.

rbonneau

Make that 26644 sponsors, including an extra 678 members who joined us yesterday. There was a flurry of activity on Friday mainly around the Google Issue but we had to force their hand and provide them with a solution for anyone to change anything! The only thing that seems important to them in member news are the titles they can give themselves which is handy but not really getting in there amongst the crowd answering our questions and making even the slightest changes to the operation of the forum.

We have made endless suggestions for improvements asked countless as yet unanswered questions on the forum

We need a FAQ section with commonly asked questions + answers the only way we can achieve this at the moment is keep posting to the same old chesnut to keep it at the top of the lists so that new users see the info immdiately

Once again can I ask you to feedback to IBM and campaign on our behalf directly for improvements to the forum

Thankyou again

Dave

Re: Proposal for a New Grid Computing Project - SIFA@wcg

Well David, I think that by giving themselves whatever titles they give themselves is a step in the right direction. At least we now can see there are quite a few of them around here, instead of just Alther who tried to answer our questions.

But your suggestion of FAQ is a good one, but right now, I guess it's up to the volunteers to do it. If someone has the time, perhaps the person can start a thread and we'll put as much information that new people seems to be asking all the time, and then compiled them and post it on the New Member Forum, and someone can periodically bump it to keep it near the top? (at least until a forum admin shows up).

The trick is to find someone who have the time to undertake such a project?? confused

johntsai

We've volunteered still no response to that thread

I think the onus is on IBM to provide the info that with the best will in the world member-to-member support cannot provide. We simply do not have access to the agent code, WU database, the infrastructure behind the project or administrator rights to the forum engine so there are questions mere mortal members of the forum cannot provide the answers to.

This is the cause of my frustration as collectively we do not have access to this information and IBM are not stepping up to the challenge of providing it for us

After all on your own member page it claims to be "Powered by IBM"

I will not stop banging on the door of IBM until this has issue has been put to bed.

Happy Crunching

Dave
