Help Please,
I have just uploaded a batch of results and downloaded new workunits with BOINC. The first of the new units started but the BOINC display is weird. It is showing progress in terms of CPU Time (elapsed) but the 'Progress' and 'To Completion' stats are static. So, I have the followng: CPU Time = 08:22 Progress - 0.000% To Completion = 08:20:06 (The same time that it started with). Any ideas? Should say that I did briefly 'suspend' this task and let the next in the queue start just see if it was a problem with this task only. Same thing happened with next in the queue. Also, what does 'preempted' mean? Thanks. |

Can you please state what application you are seeing this for? Also, what OS are you seeing this on?
Preempted means that the task was paused for a different task to execute. -Uplinger |

Ops!
Replying to my own post. Think of it as an appendix and another question. I was struck by inspiration. I had just fitted an wireless network card miniPCI to my system. Did what I could to see that it was theortically functional and then, as I don't have wi-fi at home so couldn't test it any further, disabled it via 'Device Manager' (Win XP). I re-enabled it and... BOINC started to register activity for CPU Time and Progress and To Completion. There may, though, still be problem as pre-card install the Progress (%) would would be updated on every third-decimal place increment (though not necessarily one digit increase at a time). Now it seems to update only second decimal place increments, thus (for example): 3.250 3.300 3.350 etc. Never done that before. Questions: Is this some kind of bug in BOINC? Does this mean that have to enable the wireless card at all times (just to run BOINC)? If it does mean that then might have an ongoing problem as a system meter that I have shows there is a fair performance cost on CPU frequency involved in running the wireless all the time. Argh! ![]() |

MeToo, regarding your first post, that's perfectly normal for any workunit of any project as initially its setting itself up in memory. The percent counts you give in your second post are typical of a Help Defeat Cancer on BOINC, which go in steps of 0.050%. Usually the first 10 minutes you'll see CPU time progress....then the percent and time to complete pick up. You might see percent freezing again later...seen one at 25.000%....after a few minutes it will continue again as CPU time has continued uninterruptedly.

Thank you Sekerob,
You might well have it there. Just looked and indeed the running workunit is for Help Defeat Cancer: came as big surprise to me that one as I was only doing crunching for FAH. (I've reset the option on that one again, don't know how HDC got enabled. Last question, is there any known issue with BOINC and wireless cards? If there isn't I'll use the delete this thread button. Nonetheless, by CPU frequency has just bombed. Thanks again. |

New projects are always enabled by default.

MeToo, on your Wifi and BOINC, if you're not permanently connected, or with dial up, i'd recommend to take the Network Suspended option in BOINC under the Preferences menu (not sure its called Preferences, as i run with non-English Language on BOINC). That's what i do when i go away, with enough work in the queue for the duration. Give it a try.

Hello MeToo,
I do not have any answers, but I may have relevant observations. When I switched to BOINC on one of my computers running ZoneAlarm as a firewall, I was surprised to see the ZoneAlarm icon activate once every second. The BOINC Manager and BOINC communicated with each other once a second using inter-process communication. This never went out over my LAN, but the ZoneAlarm firewall reacted to it anyway. If I knew more about the internals of networking, this probably would not seem so anomalous. It sounds as though your network device driver gets into the act somehow. Lawrence |
