This is @#$%^

Do the people who construct the projects have the time to sit and solve software issues? I don't have the time nor do I have the inclination to fight with this @#$%^&*() software. I'm willing to make my resources available when not being used to help and the entire initiative is polluted with this !@#$%^&*()_+ software. I understand that BOINC is a similar project and a group associated with a computer science deptartment at a reputable university will probally have the answer or be able to solve it. The thought of scouring several forums to make this work places a foul taste in my mouth. How many people would like to contribute, run in to this software !@#@$%%^ issue, and direct thier effort else where! I just came home from work and need to go another few rounds with this software. Why would I want to promote this initiative amongst the groups I am involved, when I am going to be plagued by people willing to participate, but are having issues with the !@#$%^ software. The reason for this rant is that I have already placed a fair amount of time and effort into attempting different approaches. Thanks!

Hi Turbulent,
So what do you want? Want us all to just rant along with you? Let me know and I'll post links to a few of my best rants. That's the best I can contribute on such short notice.

Or do you want some help? We don't do ESP here so you must ask a question in order to get help.

Re: This is @#$%^

We have had considerable success in helping people, you know. The grid software compares favourably in terms of stability with any commercial program.

Most of the issues we deal with are caused by problems with the user's computer - spyware, software conflicts, poorly configured security software. Of the remainder, they are nearly always caused by issues with individual work units and WCG always work fast to resolve such problems. You must expect a few more of these issues during a project launch, as previously unidentified issues come to light.

I don't even know what [expletive] software you are talking about - UD, BOINC, the application software? You posted in the UD forum, so can I suggest, if you dislike it so much simply switch to BOINC. It's much nicer.

Re: This is @#$%^

patience is needed but i can understand some of what he says.

the original ud was very simple and memory requirements never changed. then comes boinc and someone has to make a new thread about it. then memory requirements get changed and people even have to figure out their video cards. then problem work units make them wonder if they have to 'end' the units and how to do that.

however, once you have mastered these variations, it is guaranteed you will become a buddha and reach the true state of zen, as promised by the great one himself!

Re: This is @#$%^

Whilst WCG, The C.A.'s and the volunteer Members do anything in their power to help a member, just starting as a Cruncher, or having acquired the Ace Cruncher status, it puts no one to shame to do a little reading, before opening a thread......a member somehow came here and loaded UD or BOINC, so must have had a formed opinion to participate. Using expletives ** or symbols representing such do not invite for anyone to be hugged and cuddled by the community.

** Though understood in context, had to look the word up for its exact meaning, first when Dirk Gently used it, so here's what Meriam Webster has to say:

What software issues?
I don't have the time nor do I have the inclination to fight with this @#$%^&*() software.
We're sorry that you took the time to waste a post.
I'm willing to make my resources available when not being used to help and the entire initiative is polluted with this !@#$%^&*()_+ software.
There should only be one copy of the software per computer device name. There will be one copy of each project program, depending on how many projects you have selected. Copies of old project programs no longer being used can actually be deleted to save space. One must be careful not to delete the member files.
I understand that BOINC is a similar project and a group associated with a computer science deptartment at a reputable university will probally have the answer or be able to solve it.
solve what? My signature box below shows that I have successfully run many BOINC projects.I have also run several projects using the UD interface, both here and at grid.org
The thought of scouring several forums to make this work places a foul taste in my mouth.
That problem can be solved with chemicals. Try a stronger breath mint. Finding the answer in several forums is what the search box in the upper right is for.
How many people would like to contribute, run in to this software !@#@$%%^ issue, and direct thier effort else where! I just came home from work and need to go another few rounds with this software.
Why?
Why would I want to promote this initiative amongst the groups I am involved, when I am going to be plagued by people willing to participate, but are having issues with the !@#$%^ software.
What software? What issues?
The reason for this rant is that I have already placed a fair amount of time and effort into attempting different approaches.
What approaches? How much effort? How much rant time must be subtracted from the overall time expended?
Thanks!
We didn't do anything. More (actually ANY) information is needed.
What computer?
What operating system?
The interface sounds like UD.
What project?
What software?
What problem?
What approaches?

Some of us are wizards, but we are not magicians. We could wave our hands. A pretty girl would come out and provide this magic solution:

************ *** ******* ***** ** ****** ***** * ****.

It doesn't even contain any bad words. I can't tell you what it is, because it is magic.

We don't have anything useful to go on to solve your problem, if it actually IS a problem. We are all volunteering our own time, you know.

biggrin Re: This is @#$%^

I tried at work and at home on two different PC's - Same OS - WinXP SP2 - Followed instructions on the Help Page and Disabled (or added really) the option to let UD.exe run via (Control Panel-> System-> Advanced-> Performance Settings-> DataExecutionPrevention).

No blocked ports on the Router (Lynksys).

Disabled the "Windows Firewall" all together.

Not running any Virus Software at all. (in 20 plus years of computing I have never once had a virus)

I even enabled all the other projects but still get the same message - "Sending" / Then "Receiving 3xxx of 3xxx" and then "See Cause, html"

I suppose I could've started a new thread for this - but I feel pretty much like the guy who posted the original starting post. Just think about how many other people you've lost who won't go this far in trying to make it work.

Like it or not most people don't care how many flipping units you have processed, they just want to feel like they are doing something good.

They want to install the software and forget about it, perhaps view the first few results out of curiousity, but after that they are not going to want to even know it's running. The more attention it brings, the more likely they will uninstall it becuase it inteferes with their daily tasks.

Hint: Enabling a screen saver without asking is annoying when you already have your pc set up the way you like it. If you want to change something about my PC setup then freaking ASK me first in the setup.

In any case people aren't going to take the time trying to make something work for two basic reasons.

1. They lack the knowledge
2. They shouldn't have to do anything beyond installing the program

This is the cold hard truth - you are missing god knows how many users becuase of this problem.

I know I don't want to keep coming back to this forum to see if there is a fix or recommended solution that someone may or may not post. I saw this same problem with Seti - it's a shame that this software doesn't give people more help than it does - Error messages would be a nice start. (ie: "Can't communicate with Servers - Check blah blah blah"

Oh Well, Good luck to everyone!

Re: This is @#$%^

After browsing some other posts I found this BOINC program (No one ever puts a link for it however so my friend google told me where to find it. ( http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ ) and I just have to ask why it isn't the default program used for this?

Very easy to install - Then just add the website url ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org ) and have at it... smile

Re: This is @#$%^

Hi Snowblind,
BOINC is more capable and offers more options than UD (the default Windows client), but it is harder to install and can intimidate novices. As you have found out, computer environments vary greatly. If UD does not work on your system, then you can try BOINC, and vice-versa.
