Given the feat of adding a Throttle InfoLine in the 'i' screen of the UD Agent for the Help Defeat Cancer Work Units, how much effort would it take to change the Fight Aids and Human Proteome Folding 2 graphics screen to show that same Throttle Line.....for FAAH, just shorten the progress bar to a length similar to HDC's and voila, space galore.
----------------------------------------I'm sure many will wake up, never looking at CPU usage or in the forum....it would recoup potentially a significant amount of crunching power 'conciously' relinguished at implementation time of HPF2. Please dont tell me WCG has not had the crossing of that thought... ![]()

Sek, it appears you still find find WCG's behavior regarding the throttle just as puzzling as I do. Perhaps we are puzzled because we proceed from the assumption that WCG needs all the crunching power it can muster. Throw out that assumption and then it all begins to make sense.
News media mention the project but rarely give a URL. Never have they encouraged any of us to promote WCG or thanked us for doing so. One explanation that explains all that and the fact they throttled back 85% of their crunchers to 60% speed is that at this time they want to slow the juggernaut down rather than speed it up. We assume researchers are beating down their door to get their WUs onto our computers but perhaps that is not the case. Did you hear any of THEM cheer the fact we are now 200,000. Nope, it was members doing the cheering, NOT them. If they truly needed all the power they can get AND they wanted to be considerate of heating problems they could have easily offered the throttle without cutting it back to 60% and then emailed all UD users. Or they could have cut it back to 60% and emailed everybody. Either way would have been responsible action on heat issues and retained maximum computing power. Instead they cut it back to 60% and put the message in a form where they knew darn well very few would read it. That is not congruent with our assumptions that they are intelligent and they need all the CPU power they can get. One or the other of those assumptions is false. I leave it you to decide which one is false. |

We appreciate all of the members who run at 100% CPU. However, we are trying to get some large organizations to bring all of their computers onto the grid. One prime requirements is that they experience no adverse effects from running the grid agent, otherwise they might not join. Second, there are many novices out there who happen have machines that slow down the system clock in response to running at 100% cpu. You can read more about all of this here and here . We feel it is better to err on the side of being friendly to the donor and not require a novice to take extra action to lower the cpu throttle setting after some problem is noticed. This is why we default the throttle to 60%. We think this is a good step in our long term plans and hope it will ultimately let us earn a good reputation and many more members.
We will probably be including the throttle setting on future graphics windows. However, we are swamped with work getting other projects ready and managing the current ones. All of these features take time. So please be patient. |

Thanks Viktors......after i posted on July 21, i did some more reflection and some events and statements on the grid in the last 24 hours confirmed.
----------------------------------------I know the Throttle Infoline origin and timeline from posting to inception. All Groundwork has alrready been done. So, how much effort would it be to incorporate into present project graphics of FAAH and HPF2? Give the private cruncher some commitment! I'll be further silent and process WU's ![]()

Yep, I'm convinced. Throw out assumption #1. Keep crunching Sek, there's no hope. It's IBM and they'll gash their own throats open every time. They're pretty good with the machines but don't have a clue how to deal with people, never have had a clue and never will have.
