Re: Pentium 4 HT and Pentium D are getting similar points while running 50% in task manager

Apples vs oranges!

A Pentium D has 2 Pentium 4 cores (each with a FPU). It is almost twice as fast as 1 Pentium 4 of the same speed. (Contention makes it slightly slower than 2 equivalent speed Pentium 4s). The Pentium M is an advanced, second generation Pentium 3 architecture. It accomplishes much more per clock cycle than the Pentium 4 Netburst architecture does. So a 1.8 Ghz Pentium M is faster than a 3 Ghz Pentium 4. But it runs much cooler, which is why the upcoming Conroe (Core 2) from Intel is almost entirely a third generation Pentium 3, with just one section derived from the Pentium 4.

Re: Pentium 4 HT and Pentium D are getting similar points while running 50% in task manager

Interesting Dirk.....someone started a thread where you can report your CPU specs and BOINC benchmarks which (s)he collates it in a spreadsheet. My P4 HT 2.53ghz does 1273 over 3125 per this morning.....when BOINC does the 5th day automatic. So happened i just booted from Patch Wednesday (for Italy), waited for a HPF2 segment to finish. System was clean with BOINC as only program running....!

An unfavourable thing hopefully fixed in 5.6 is, that the benchmark suspends the crunching not at a segment end. On a HPF2 that means for me, jumping back ** to the beginning of a segment...... thank you very much but the one now running has only 11 and is projected to finish with almost 7.5 CPU hours....up to 40 minutes chucked.

** Had to set the memory unload option, as benchmarking would corrupt the WU.....some have to do the inverse to prevent this bad behavior.

Back to the HT and the doubting Thomasses....points went yesterday to 2813 on 1 machine....1544 from BOINC. The other 1269 came from the UD agent. As it was reiterated a few times by WCG reps "points of BOINC and UD being on par approximately", gained 4435 points on latter agent, a 633 pd average. Whilst BOINC dropped from 1260 to 1040 average in this week, overall went to 1673....a good 400 daily gain.

I'm sure a few in this forum, or behind closed doors are going to cry foul .....these are bog down standard agents, no Tuxsoft optimizations or the like.

I'm happy either way as long as you leave Pandora's box alone

Re: Pentium 4 HT and Pentium D are getting similar points while running 50% in task manager

A few things I think I need to throw in. Dual Core machines do something approaching twice the WCG work as do single core machines of the same basic architecture (given that they have appropriate memory and disk space and that they are running BOINC and the profile is set to use more than one processor). In turn, they get someting approaching twice as many points...once they get through the pending results queue.

Windows reports CPU utilization incorrectly on HT machines. It has since the HT machines came out. Perhaps MicroSoft will do something different in Vista..but who knows.

You can run one BOINC agent and one UD agent on one dual core or dual processor machine. I am not sure why you would want to do it but it can be done.....I tried it when first exposed to BOINC and and dual core machines.

The spreadsheet that contains the ratings mentioned by Sekerob above is located at http://www.unofficialworldcommunitygrid.com/CPUBoincRatings.xls

Kind Regards to all; Keep Crunching.

Re: Pentium 4 HT and Pentium D are getting similar points while running 50% in task manager

In summary, using BOINC running 100% CPU with 1Gig RAM
PC1: Xeon 3.0Ghz: ~1700 points daily
PC2: Pentium D 3.0Ghz: ~3400
PC3: Pentium 4 HT 3.0Ghz: ~1700

Dual Core is really twice as fast in crunching!!!
Will see how well core 2 perform compare to the Pentiums soon.
Stay Tuned.
