Task percentage is going backwards

The project that my computer is working on now was at 49% at 4 hours. Then when I looked at it again about an hour later, it was at 47%. I thought that it was something wrong with the computer so I restarted it. When it was done restarting, the task runtime was at 7 minutes instead of at 5 hours and 0% complete. I have been using World Community Grid for 6 months and this has never happened. The same thing happened to another one of my computers. Is this a problem with my computers or something else? And if it is a problem with my computers, what can I do?

Thanks

Re: Task percentage is going backwards

To understand what is going on, you have to remember that each task is split up into smaller chunks. When a chunk is complete, the agent saves the progress (a checkpoint file) and continues. If the agent is interrupted, then it has to go back to the checkpoint and continue from there.

Now, for estimating progress the agent assumes all the chunks are the same size. However, it is actually impossible to tell beforehand exactly how long it will take for a particular chunk, so it may take more or less time than the predicted period. So, when it gets to the end of a chunk and it's ahead of the predicted time, then your progress will jump forward. If, on the other hand, the chunk takes a lot longer than predicted, progress will appear to stick at the end of the predicted interval. It may even go backwards in rare cases. This is what you are seeing here.

The best thing to do is to leave your agent running uninterrupted (give it a day) until it has got over the tricky part. If that doesn't work, then report back and we'll look into it further.

Re: Task percentage is going backwards

Hi Jesse Wagoner,
The explanation that Didactylos is correct, but . . . We are running into some bugs in HPF2 (see http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7868) so if you lose 5 hours, I suspect that in fact you ran into a program bug. No matter how proud the program author is, when we run a large scientific program over a vast number of work units, we usually start out finding lots of problems.

So don't worry about your computer unless it starts throwing errors while running FAAH.

Re: Task percentage is going backwards

Same thing for me. I run FAAH and it blocks at 33% and sometimes falls to 32%. Just before, It fell from 33% to 0% after a reboot. BTW, the best docking energy is approximately -25, which is unusually low.
Regards

Re: Task percentage is going backwards

Remember, larger negative values are GOOD. This work unit sounds like it's really worth waiting for :-)

Re: Task percentage is going backwards

You'll have to avoid rebooting until it checkpoints. FAAH checkpoints every time the green graph reaches the end and starts again.

Re: Task percentage is going backwards

Thank you for explaining it to me. I understand it a lot better now, and I am releived that it is not a problem with my computer.

Re: Task percentage is going backwards

I have a unit that repeatedly goes from 33% to 31%...........the only interruption being when I actually check the clients progress.

Should I dump it?

Almost 3 hours in and no checkpoint.
