angry Stuck Progress

My task (HPF2) is stuck on 57.1%. The three graphs aren't running and the protein module moves about twice every minute.

I've tried rebooting, it dips down a couple of points but once it reaches that magic 57.1% it freezes again for at least several days.

This is very odd, as my computer really shreds at the grid usually. My times are comparitively faster than most peoples.

I saw a post a little while back where someone had a similar problem, but they were told to just wait. It has been stuck for over a week now, and I'm tired of waiting thinking . Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Sean

Re: Stuck Progress

You need patience, and you need to stop rebooting. Every time you interrupt the work unit, it goes back to the last checkpoint. This particular chunk of the work unit is very difficult to crunch, and is taking a long time. Leave your computer running constantly for a few days, and it should get past the sticky bit.

The new project (HPF2) checkpoints less frequently than previous projects, and from what we are seeing so far, when it does have trouble finding a solution it appears to freeze for quite some time. I'm afraid that's just how the science works, and there's not a lot that can be done about it.

If you post your device ID here, the grid techs will be able to take a closer look and advise you further if required.

shock Re: Stuck Progress

Hello flametech21,
No lines being graphed on the UD Application View?! That means the program is not running properly. It is a very different problem from having the lines advancing normally but not seeing the progress bar increment for several hours, which is legitimate behavior. If you are running Rosetta 5.07 (issued 28 June 2006) or higher then you will want to report this to the staff using 'Contact Us' so that they can debug using your work unit. If it is the old 5.06 version of Rosetta (with bugs that we have fixed) then don't bother. In either case, use Task Manager to kill the Rosetta application. This will download a new work unit and a new copy of Rosetta.

You have been too patient. But that is good. A lot of people get upset after 2 or 3 hours without progress, which can happen legitimately.

Re: Stuck Progress

Sean aka flametech21,

My 2 cents...... if after 1 week running and amongst a frame of 48 hours of uninterrupted crunching, no boots as i understand from your writing and stuck at 57.1% in the 'i' screen of the UD GUI, on a machine normally ripping thru WU's, including HPF2's......kill 'UD_7324001.exe' or something like that in taskmanager. It will send an error back to WCG and fetch you a new version of HPF2 for UD, just out per post of Viktors. That is, if you only do HPF2 as chance could send you first a FAAH.

Post your Device number here which you can find in the 'V' screen. The techs can see if others had also problem(s) with your particular WU from the logs @ WCG.

If by miracle, suddenly you saw progression to 57.2% at the 11th hour....ignore this post.

PS, if you have a grid shredder, might you have a 2 / 4 core machine? If so, there's a post on how to convert to BOINC. Can do 2 / 4 WU's simultaneously biggrin

PPS, Lawrence just posted before me while i was finishing this writing, but wanted to share anyway....we're seeing more of these conflicting advises on this 'stuck' progress matter with HPF2...seen even advises of killing after a few minutes of stuck in the 'i'. Well a few hours is warrented.

cheers

confused Re: Stuck Progress

Thank you all for your help.

Didactylos: According to my stats page it has been around six days since my last return. I can verify that it has been stuck on 57.1 for at least five of those days since my computer is always on 24/7. I have only rebooted once during that period, and it has been 4 days since that reboot. I am pretty sure that 96 straight hours stuck on 57.1 with no graph movement is unusual behavior biggrin .

lawrencehardin: Yes, the lines have not moved once in the last four days thinking . My rosetta exe shows v5.0.5.2. I Killed ud_7324001.exe and then got a new work unit for faah, so that solves my problem.

Sekerob: My device ID is 391401. Hopefully some WCG Tech will read this and check up on it. Unfortunatley, I don't have a dual core but it is a very nice system for a single core.

Good day to you all,
Sean

This problem with the graphics not advancing.... is it happening on all operating systems? Or is it confined to Win98/ME/SE? Core graphics routines on those were 16 bit not 32 bit like Bill the Bandit claimed. Perhaps the graphics are attempting to address more pels and/or colors than 16 bits allows?

Are you seeing the graphs progress on the graphics screen (the 'i' button)?

If you are, chances are it's working fine, but it just hit a tough area.

However, what worries me is that when you rebooted it took 2.5 hours to "get back to" 70%. HPF2 checkpoints more regularly than HPF1, even if the progress bar doesn't progress (since it only progreses for completed structures, not attempted structures). Depending on the speed of the machine and size of the protein, checkpoints can happen anywhere from 5 mintues to 60 minutes. But, over 10 hours? That's just too much.

If the graphs aren't advancing, kill the workunit.

Could you please list your computer specs and device id please? The device ID can be found on the 'checkmark' button.

Thanks,

Re: Stuck Progress I am also stuck)

A slow machine downloaded 3 HPF2 units last week. The last one has been stuck on 33% for a day and would probably not be complete by tomorrow's reporting deadline. I threw it out and will just run FAAH on that one for awhile.

20 hours gone.
