Thread: How should I power down my 2nd hard drive not being used? |

I put a 2nd hard drive in my computer to store and edit pictures and family video. It has been running for the past 2 weeks while this program has been running. I know I could just unhook the cables to it but I was thinking that I could just tell the computer that there is no 2nd hard drive in setup after I restarted the computer. It would seem to be easier doing it under the setup operation.
Any reason I should instead disconnect the cables it? (I would have to do some moving to get the side off the computer) BenT |

Ben, I no longer have a second hard drive, so I am fumbling here. On your Settings - Control Panel - Power Options, how long do you idle before you turn off power to your hard disks? If there is an access to one of your drives, do both spin up?

----------------------------------------I think you're out of luck on this one Windows Power Management talks of Hard Disks plural when you click the drop down boxes. I've had a look in my PC's BIOS and again the talk is of Hard Drives with the extra s. You may be lucky and have an extra environmentally friendly Bios that allows you to power down each disk on a different time schedule but it's unlikely. I've Googled the question and this hasn't come up with anything. Maybe a letter to Bill to have it included in Longhorn might do the trick. You just need to make yourself visible amongst all his Spam. Sorry its not good news Dave  |

Well, I talked to some in the IS department here at work and like I thought, I would have to disconnect the power from of the hard drive to power it down.
So I guess I will be doing that and plug it back in when I need to do look at that hard drive. BenT |
