For the last two+ days my machine has been telling me it has "encountered a problem while attempting to connect to the Grid Server. This may occur if the Grid Server cannot find any suitable workunits for your Agent, because the Grid Server is offline for maintenance, or because your computer is not online.... The Agent will automatically communicate when the problem is solved."
I'm definitely online, the Grid Server must be up because nobody else has posted about this, and it seems unlikely that there are no suitable workunits because my secondary machine (which is not nearly as good) gets 'em just fine but the primary doesn't! I have tried closing the Agent and have tried rebooting; no luck. Ideas, suggestions? -EmilyB |

Assuming you are connected, when you see that message, click on OK then minimize the agent and then double click on the WCG icon in your systray. That should force a reconnect to the sever. If that does not work, email your problem to tech support. Hope that helps <dataman>

dataman, they ought to put you on the payroll!...........You are the closest thing I have seen to an actual admin for this board. Keep up the good work until we get some support.

emily, I had that problem for a couple fo days and found out that I had modified my profile to set the disk value to 10 MB. when I set it to some GB instead, minimized and reopened the WCG agent, it connected up and downloaded a new work unit. In your profile, what is the value for disk usage?
I don;t know what the disk usage means, it dowesn't appear to have anything to do with how much disk space you actually have on your PC, but the higher the number, the longer workunits seem to take to complete, and the more points you get for completing them. |

The Storage value sets the maximum amount of disk space the Agent is allowed to use. Basically it's a cap you can set. If it's set too low the Agent will give the message "Unable to connect" because the server can't find any workunits to give to the client that fit into the alloted space. Actually, the agent will give the "Unable to connect" message for basically everything when it can't get a workunit. This could be because there is an actual network problem, disk space is full, the server can't find any workunits that fit your machine configuration or profile, etc. 10MB was definitely too small

That was it! Thank you! I had meant to give it 10 GB and misread. Up and running like a dream now....

cool,
----------------------------------------i lost 2 days to that exact same thing, thought I picked 10 GB but had 10 MB I guess if we ever want to finish a workunit and then not download another for some reason, we know how to do it - 10 MB Alther, if disk space in the profile is only used to tell the client how much disk space to use, then why does increasing the value seem to make workunits take longer, and why are more points awarded? It seems like the agent doesn't use anywhere near the 10GB I have it set to now, and if it has no effect on the amount of processing done to a workunit, and workunits are all about the same size, then why does it seem to take longer than when I had it set to a lower value? It's just your imagination . All workunits are roughly the same size, space-wise. Some are harder than others, but they're still the same size. The size of the workunit has very little to do with how long it will take to run. This is due to the non-determinstic nature of the program.

It's just your imagination . OK, I can believe that. I'll accept that all the workunits are the same size, and the amount of processing is the same for each workunit, and that some workunits will randomly take less time to process. I guess what I don't understand is why the disk value I set on the web page affects points per workunit. I'll keep mine at 10GB for max points, but if it has no other effect, it seems misleading. Is it something that may be implemented in a dfferent project, but is not relevant to the proeome folding because all the workunits are the same size? |

Increasing the amount of disk you allocate to the grid has several benefits:
