I am just trying to figure out how I can make my Box run faster. I found this RAM, which was apparently designed specifically for my motherboard.
http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/asus_launch.html Just from "eyeballing" it, it looks like I could get a 10% increase in performance. I am not a big overclocker, but I am learning. My ram is currently running at 220MHz, but this RAM will go up to 248 MHz. I think this may also help with stability problems above 2.2GHz overclock (it crashes almost immediately above 2.2GHz) Anybody have a similar config? The CPU on this beast is a 'thing of beauty', but I think I shortchanged myself by not picking up some top-notch ram. ![]() CPU-Z Database (ID : 102447) Submitted by bbfl Submitted on Wed, 28 Jun 2006 04:36:12 +0200 with CPU-Z 1.34.1 CPU : AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (*2) CPU PSN : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ CPU EXT : MMX (+) 3DNow! Ram speed has little performance impact on an AMD Athlon 64 based system. CPU MHz is king. A 10% increase in RAM speed will not net you a 10% increase in real world system performance. In fact, you may not see any increase at all except in synthetic RAM benchmarks.
----------------------------------------Does your board have RAM dividers? If so just use those to keep RAM speed at or around stock while you crank up the FSB and CPU MHz. I have 2 dual-core Opteron based systems overclocked to 2.8GHz running value RAM and huge memory dividers to keep them running within spec. The systems are still extremely fast, in fact, I've never seen a result crunched in less time than my rigs! In conclusion, you only need to upgrade to faster RAM if your board doesn't have dividers or you can't get any of the dividers to work properly. ![]() |

Olympic is correct on the dividers. You also have to boost Vcore as you boost the clock or it will crash no matter what kind of RAM and/or dividers you have. Then you have to watch the CPU temperature because higher Vcore makes the CPU run hotter. Additional CPU cooling is essential when overclocking.

It's interesting, but the actual speed of the RAM itself indeed significantly effects system performance. I found a special offer rock bottom priced (well in Italian terms) 512mb kit of Kingston sold as "Hyper X" Value Ram. Bought 2 to replace a 1gb "Extreme" strip i'd burned because i OC'd my Shuttle just 2%. System now runs significantly quicker AND 2 centigrades lower than before, a bonus. The 2x 512mb was quite a bit cheaper than a new 1gb.

I think this thread belongs in the Chat Room. It certainly does not belong in BOINC Support. Suggestions/Feedback is for sharing ideas on improving the network according to the official descriptor so it doesn't fit there either.

Dagorath is correct here. Moving this to the Chat Room to avoid confusion from people looking for BOINC Agent Support.
