Ok so I just set up BOINC on my computers replacing the UD agent and I'm just trying to get them set properly. I was trying to set the default (home) profile for the BOINC agent on the WCG page and it looked like by default it was set to only crunch after the computer has been idle for 3 minutes? Is this correct? I want it to crunch all the time even when im using it like the UD agent. Should I reset this to zero? I noticed when it's running the time to completion tends to count upwards. Is project weight the CPU percentage to use or is it something else? What other settings would help performance?
----------------------------------------Oh and also I would like to try this on my dual core laptop (so long as its temp stays down), what settings do I need to make for it to run on both cores? Thanks guys. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 27, 2006 7:40:14 PM] |

The default settings should give you maximum performance.
Do work only after computer is idle for: n minutes only has an effect if you also set Do work while computer is in use? to No. Leave it on Yes and you'll crunch all the time. The Project Weight setting only applies if you have other (non WCG) projects running on BOINC. The default 100 will give equal weight to all projects. On multiprocessors, at most use: 4 processors means that BOINC will use both cores by default. So, you're all set :-) |

Ok so I just set up BOINC on my computers groovy, your are 99% finished. I was trying to set the default (home) profile for the BOINC agent on the WCG page and it looked like by default it was set to only crunch after the computer has been idle for 3 minutes? Correct me if I am wrong guys, but I dont think this applies by default. I checked and mine is set that way too, by my boinc client runs 24x7x365. I noticed when it's running the time to completion tends to count upwards. this is related to boinc and the way it calculates "time remaining". It is difficult to predict how much time remaining because calculations on this piece or that may take more or fewer cycles. Dont worry. The closer you get the the end of a WU the more accurate it is. I think UD Agent has the same issue but it more much more pronounced in BOINC (rumor has it that a newer version should address this issue soon) Is project weight the CPU percentage to use or is it something else? What other settings would help performance? Project weight is what percentage of the time you want to crunch for WCG fighting the good fight and what percentage you want to waste searching for aliens (Seti@home for example). Oh and also I would like to try this on my dual core laptop (so long as its temp stays down), what settings do I need to make for it to run on both cores? None, if you actually have two cores that is really the only requirement. it should work fine out of the box. This includes Pentium 4 HT systems. Careful with the laptop. They are meant to be light and fast not heavy hitters. A lot more users encounter heat issues on laptops. (I did). You may want to consider running the UD agent (gasp), because you can crank down cpu usage to 60% and not stress the box too badly. Thanks guys. No, thank you for the help! |

Thanks again. Two more quick questions...
#1 What should I watch to keep my laptop temp under? Right now im running both cores at 100% and it's about 66*C. This seems pretty high to me, but maybe it is ok? #2 Are they working on integrating the points system for both UD and BOINC? I like the basic business style of BOINC but I miss the great stats system that the UD has. Also will these combine with UD stats? I would hate to start over after years worth of crunching and 600,000 points |

That's on the warm side, but probably not dangerously so. Might be wise to scale down a little, though. Check the maximum operating temperature in your documentation. Also, make sure it has good ventilation. Put it on a hard surface, with a clear space around the vents.
WCG combine UD and BOINC points (BOINC points are scaled to roughly match UD points). This combined score is shown on the website (and only on the website; both clients display their private point totals). |

I like to keep my desktops running under 55C and I have them set up to shutdown at 60C. Some say I'm overly cautious while others say I'm running too hot. My personal opinion is that 66C is too high and I would either add more cooling or throttle back the CPU. If you leave it the way it is then pay close attention to CPU temperature when the room temperature rises above normal.

This combined score is shown on the website (and only on the website; both clients display their private point totals). Really? Maybe it just takes a while to update the results. I crunched all day today on BOINC default and haven't seen an update on my WCG stats page (the main one with graphs, rankings, etc.) my device profice for BOINC did update once As for CPU temps, i have been reading documentation about my laptop and it seems that it has high heat tolerances as the low speed fan runs from 50*-74* then at 75* it changes to high speed. It kind of scares me to think it would run that high but i am setting up some CPU temp and fan speed software. My laptop is my only dual core machine and id like to take advantage of the crunching power from it, but i don't want to burn it out too quickly or damage it because i need it for college in the fall. I may run it for a few days and just watch it. Considering the fan settings, 66* doesnt seem too awful bad considering the high speed fan doesn't turn on till 75* I don't know... |

I would freak if my CPU ever hit 75, lol, but that's just me. Remember also, I'm more into desktop than laptop so consider that too. You could get the official Data Sheet for that CPU from Intel or AMD and see what they say about Absolute Maximum Temperature and Normal Operating Temperature. All the chip's specs will be on the Data Sheet.
