confused Throttle for BOINC?

I have a PC but some of my team members have MACs. For me the UD agent throttle feature was the reason I moved from another volunteer grid to World Community Grid, and the new default (as well as the downloadable tool) is a great feature to present to new team members.

1) Does the BOINC agent have an equivalent procedure to the UD agent throttle?

2) Is the default usage percentage still 100% for new BOINC downloads?

Re: Throttle for BOINC?

Hi Baywhale,

1) If your CPU runs hot then consider increasing the cooling capacity. The cheap way to do that is to remove the case cover but that may not be a good idea if there are children around because they like to explore. Another danger is that metallic objects can accidentally fall into the computer and short something out. It's NOT RECOMMENDED but lots of people do it.

2) Yes. The latest version of BOINC still uses 100% of the idle CPU time. On your My Profiles page on the website you can set it to run only when you are not using the computer if that's what you were getting at.

Re: Throttle for BOINC?

Posed the question somewhere else too, but if one runs BOINC on dual/quads and utilise less then the available cores for BOINC, would the relative percent not drop to 75 or 50 e.g. Would that have a CPU temp drop coming with it? In the WCG Boinc profile one can set the 1 to 4 processors to be used ?!?!?!?

The new UD Throttle util is bril. Used the manual environment setting until i switched......fortunately, with Speedfan (freeware), one can control the CPU temp as it in/decreases the fan speed to keep temp at a flat desired level...mine is set at 60c for CPU and 45 for HD....i very rarely notice BOINC does not back off to user apps, only during transmissions....with upcoming compressions in future version it might get a bit more noticable, but hey, whats' 1 or 2 minutes a day!

Since 85% of the users still runs on UD agent the 100 to 60% move I guess will give a significant Global CPU time drop in coming stats....whether this is visible in the Time stats, i dont know as UD agent was reporting clock time, not CPU time.

Re: Throttle for BOINC?

Hello Baywhale,
We do not have a throttle for BOINC projects yet. You can throttle Windows BOINC applications with ThreadMaster: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490#17291

I do not know if there is an equivalent utility for Linux or Mac OS X.

Re: Throttle for BOINC?

We are working on a way for users to set their BOINC throttle % via the BOINC Device Profile on the website. I don't have a firm date on when we'll be finished with this.

Thanks,
Blaine.

Thanks for these answers, folks, you're all very helpful.

Especially pleased to hear work is under way for the BOINC equivalent – it will make a real difference to the many people put off by the hassle involved with alternatives such as threadmaster.
