Looks like agent takes only small part of multiprocessor system power sad

Re: Better Multi-Processor support

The agent currently only supports one processor (multi-thread). However the way Windows reports it is a bit misleading. My 3.0 GHz dual processor machine (shown running at 50%) still outperforms my 2.5 GHz machine (shown running at 100%). <dataman>

I remember reading somewhere that is is possible with Windows XP to assign a processor affinity setting to an application

You would then create another user account on XP and install the agent again only this time you would assign the agents affinity to the second processor.

Then with what I think is called fast user switching you would log into each user ID and launch the agent. The one in user id 1 is glued to processor 1 and the one in user id 2 is glued to processor 2

for additional processors further user accounts are used.

Give it a whirl and post back on the outcome

Regards

Dave

you need to do the second install into a different directory to the first and then they should run completely independantly

Re: Better Multi-Processor support

Hi All...

What about using a prog like firedaemon.

It lets you run apps as services, and assign processor afinity to each service. I used to use it when running the original UD folding client on a 4 way system... worked fine.

Cheers

Re: Better Multi-Processor support

Indeed works fine but i think it would be better if there was an official option for this. More people with lots of multi cpu systems would join, but i think they are working on it smile

cool Re: Better Multi-Processor support

Sounds very interesting. If anybody is trying firedaemon with the WCG Agent, could they post their experience here? There is another thread where the attempt to multi-process is having trouble communicating through the firewall. What firewall is being run with firedaemon?

smile Re: Better Multi-Processor support

You may be saying you definatly know only one processor with your grid is being allocated.

if you haven't all ready ctrl-alt-del for task manager... click processes,

Find WCGrid_Rosetta ... highlight & right click... at the bottom of the

Window, see ... Set Affinity Click, Set Affinity ... if both cpu 0 & cpu 1

are checked your version of World Community Grid is Hyperthreading

also check the bios usually F2 during startup booting to see if Hyperthreading is enabled Thanks swl 01801_2454

lastly within Windows Task Manager (once opened)

click performance (see the cpu usage, cpu usage histry etc.)

click View ( for this particular view must have performance view showing

within this view click *CPU History* & click one graph per cpu

this one graph per cpu may all ready have a dot in it's window

you'll see two cpu usage history grafs in the Performance task manager

window once the ( one graph per cpu is clicked

confused Re: Better Multi-Processor support

The FireDaemon site at http://www.firedaemon.com/ says specifically that it works with the United Devices Grid Agent used on http://www.grid.org It is a $29.00 download of about 5.4 MB and supposedly allows the grid agent to run as a service on each CPU of a multi-processor Windows system (NOT Windows 95/98 though). Is there anybody with a multi-processor system who would like to experiment with FireDaemon?

Re: Better Multi-Processor support

If FireDaemon works, I would be surprised if other programs that allow you to run programs as a service don't work just as well. There are a number out there that are free, including, if memory serves, one from Microsoft called RunAsService or something like that. I'll see if I can dig up more, as I've used that one and possibly one or two other free ones in the past.

I can't test FireDaemon, as (a) I don't really want to spend $29 for a program I have no other use for, and (b) I can't install it to the renderfarm (I was lucky to be allowed to run WCG as it is, as we try to keep those machines as software-free and optimized as possible!), so I have no other dual-processor machines to test it on.
