I received the following from one of my team members and I do not have a clue. Anyone have any idea what I should tell her?
I wanted to ask you something about the World Community Grid project. Does anyone report having problems with Internet Explorer with this installed? I have been having errors with IE since around the time I started the Grid. The error messages are always about encountering problems with Add-on's. I'm not even sure what add-on's are! Just wondered if it has anything to do with this. Thanks! |

The UD agent doesn't install any IE extensions. I suspect that the member picked up some spyware from somewhere.
He should run the standard malware sweeps, or reinstall his operating system. Browse safe, my friends. |

Please provide data like OS, version, service pack, IE version...is it fully updated thru Windows Update anything....add-ons can be found and managed far as i know in IE7 thru a menu....in IE6 i think they are called "helper objects". A Little app called BHOdemon can find them as well as allowing to activate/de-activate. Deactivate them all and activate one by one to see which one causes the problem.
----------------------------------------As Didactylos notes, spyware is a likely...BHOdemon should identify it as well as Spyware scanners like AdAware and Spybot

Thank you Didactylos and Sekerob!
I will pass on this information. She is a non tech user and probably does not have a clue on how to manage any of these items. I will see if she has any type of the sypware scanners on her PC and if not, find one for her to download. Thank you again! |

Point her to 'Useful Utilities' at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7397#61061
Anti-spyware utilities are listed in section 9. Lawrence |

Could be spyware. Or it could be the "error messages" she mentions are simply IE telling her she needs to install an add-on she doesn't have, eg. Flash Player. Without more information from her it's hard to know what's happening. Re-installing the OS is not warranted from the information in hand at this time. And if she doesn't know what an add on is then she likely isn't capable of reinstalling the OS properly anyway.
