Running the agent as a Windows service.

Hi there.

I work at the ITS department for SUNY Brockport. I have been put in charge for finding a way to have the UD agent run on all of our lab machines. We use Deep Freeze, which we know how to work around. We require students to login in order to use the computers.

I am trying to get the agent to run as a Windows service so that it will run while the machine is logged out. We have many machines that sit idle most of the day and we want to make sure we can run the agent as much as possible. Any suggestions on how to get the agent to run as a service? I have tried running the "sc" command in a comand prompt window, but the service that is created refuses to run!

Any ideas on how to make it into a service, or to get the service to run? I am aware of BOINC, yet I am trying to get this to be a stand alone thing so we can view the progress through the UD agent window. Thanks for your time!

Steve, ITS at Suny Brockport

Re: Running the agent as a Windows service.

There are instructions here: http://www.unofficialworldcommunitygrid.com/service.shtml

I would still recommend BOINC for a large deployment. Part of the reason for this is UD requires that each host is registered seperately. If you create your image from a UD client that has already been registered, bad things will happen. BOINC lets you use the same image on all computers, and gets a new host ID automatically when it connects to the server. At the moment, there is no way to automate this for UD. Nobody wants to type the same username and password into a few hundred computers....

BOINC can also be deployed using Group Policy, but that's not relevant here.

Re: Running the agent as a Windows service.

Thanks much! We'll see how this works. I know no one wants to individually do it on a few hundred machines, but we'll figure something out. Most of our machines are already imaged anyway so we'd have to push this out.

Thanks for your time once again!

Hi Sbegy (aka Steve)

Please send us your contact information and we will set up some communication on scripting and how other Universities have deployed World Community Grid.

Just send us your contact information through the "contact us" facility on the bottom of most pages.

Thanks!

Tedi

Re: Running the agent as a Windows service.

Hi,

now we are deploying WCG Agents to pc labs in our university. We have created two batch files for easier deploying and removing WCG Agents as the Windows Service.

If you want, you can download it from here with needed tools from Windows NT/2000 Resource Kit and with CPU throttle optimizer.

It is very simple batch with one REG file, nothing complicated. But it seems that agent as Windows Service uses fixed CPU throttle about 50%. Optimizer has no effect.

Maybe somebody will find this batch useful smile
