How can I allocate more hard disk space for WCG processing?

I just installed and am running WCG, no problems. However, looking at my device ratings, they show me as having only .98 gig. I actually have 18 gig of free space, and would like to be using more of that to speed the processing. Can I do anything about this?

Re: How can I allocate more hard disk space for WCG processing?

Hello Ravenna,
The installation routine always defaults to an authorization of 1 GB (0.98 GB since it authorizes 1,000,000,000 bytes of disk storage, less than 2**30 bytes which is the real definition of gigabyte). This storage is not actually allocated. It simply says that the WCG is authorized to use up to a gigabyte on your hard drive. The actual storage used is much smaller. HPF fits into 50 MB and I think that FAAH is even smaller. You can change this by going to My Grid - Device Manager and creating a new named profile to replace 'default'. Within the new profile, use the drop-down menu by 'Hard drive space to allocate?' to change the maximum storage authorized. Then save the new named profile. Then change your device to use the new profile, using the drop-down menu that shows all your profiles.

A common mistake is to try to edit 'default'. This seems to work, but default never really changes. Remember, once you create a new named profile, you have to SAVE it, or it disappears.

You do not need to change your disk authorization, but if you increase it, you will get a tiny increase in points. There is a post in 'Start Here' that gives the point score formula.

Re: How can I allocate more hard disk space for WCG processing?

Thank you, Lawrencehardin. I'm not doing this for the points, just thought it would process faster if more space were allocated, but I gather that's not the case. So apparently there's no problem. smile

Increasing the storage is helpful for generalities, but does not run faster.

I don't know whether you are on the UD interface or BOINC.

The guaranteed way to increase processing speed is to set any UD screensavers to (none), and also any others, for that matter if they are there. 3-D screensavers are a special no-no since they are greedy and will use most of the computer. On the UD interface, you can simply click on the WCG icon if you want to look at the task screen and graphics ... which takes a few % away from the processing. A down arrow at the bottom right exits to the icon again. WCG is supposed to get some BOINC graphics one of these days, but it's not there yet. Some other projects have that option.

My monitor is set to turn off to standby after about 20 minutes or so if nothing's happening on the screen, which reduces heat in the room.
