Community Service Request

Hello,

Me and my group are wanting to know if the: Community Admins, World Community Admin, Grid Admin could sign me off on some community service if I: 1.) Got referrels to the World Community Grid Project. 2.) Recruit members and family I know to join my group and tell them to join the project and to at least complete two to three work units before June 9th, 2006. All would have to be done is an e-mail statement saying I have done at least seven hours of community service and a telephone number.

Re: Community Service Request

So.... having your computer crunch numbers while you sleep, eat, go to work or school, sit on the sofa, watch movies, etc is community service?

What happened to picking up trash, working at a shelter, feeding the homeless, collecting clothing for the needy, reading to elderly people in nursing homes, building or repairing a home for a family, or refereeing a kid's supervised sports game?

Re: Community Service Request

What you self-certify is up to you, but the CAs and admins have no information about how much time you spend.

What sort of community service are we talking about, anyway? If it's voluntary, why does it need signing off? If it's court ordered, don't they tell you what to do? I don't understand.

The thing about WCG is, it's zero effort. We're grateful for your donation of computer time, but if you want to volunteer your own time, please find something more... physical.

Re: Community Service Request

The community service is not voluntary but mandatory for completion in my Social Civics class for a grade. I'm also promoting the site in my biology and social civics class with posters and a put-out brochures so more physical labor would be involved. Also, I'm volunteering at my local YMCA for about five hours tommorrow but the reason I need community service here is because my area has low amounts of community service avaliable and dont have time for postitions to open up. Also, you would not have to sign off on time. You just have to fill out an excel sheet that just includes: Name, Community Service Performed, Date, Signature (Typed Name OK), Telephone Number. I can just include the stat's page under My Grid and my groups as some type of time verification and proof.

Re: Community Service Request

Social Civics class, huh, that's what every hardened criminal says wink

Seriously, I think you're doing a great community service by spreading the word to friends and relatives and crunching WUs too. The problem seems to be that your computer does all the crunching. On the other hand you've probably spent close to an hour installing up the software, checking to make sure it's running OK, posting in the forum, etc. I do hope you get something for your efforts thus far.

Here's another idea that might interest you and it would be easy for your teacher to verify it. David Autumns is making a podcast about WCG. If you have or can borrow a webcam or a DV cam then you and your group might consider creating a 5 minute video promoting WCG. Submit it to David Autumns and he'll put it on iTunes and other feeds and your video will be broadcast around the world. Your teacher can see it and know you did the work. I'm fairly certain David Autumns would be willing to help verify. There is a thread about the podcast in the Chat forum here. David's email address is under one of the icons at the bottom of each of his posts.

I've already given David a 3 minute video which covers the basics of how grid computing works, why it helps research and the URL for the WCG website. I've been thinking we could use another 3/5 minute folllow-up on why WCG is safe with regards to viruses, hacking, etc., and/or a bit on the fact there are 2 agents to chose from (BOINC vs. UD) and/or how to install the software with maybe a few screenshots. Really, it doesn't have to be much. Even some impromptu interviews with friends telling their reasons for crunching. Add a little music, jazz it up, make it fun, anything to get the WCG url in their eyes/ears. Consult with David regarding verification, script and topics before you shoot anything.

That's a sensible solution, Dagorath.

Re: Community Service Request

Thanks, Didactylos.

I've been thinking about the discussion in the recruiting thread regarding getting WCG into schools. Maybe csee200840 has provided some insight into one way that might be accomplished. Knreed mentioned WCG is getting an intern this summer and the intern might work on promoting WCG. If the intern put together an info package to present WCG to teachers and provide suggestions on how teachers can incorporate a project like csee200840's into lesson plans, I think it would be well received in the schools.
