What's happened?

My UD agent PCs can connect to the Internet and WCG, but the agent won't upload or download WUs. I thought this problem'd been fixed. confused

Re: What's happened?

I am running BOINC and it just downloaded some WCG workunits. How many days of activity have you asked for in your master BOINC profile? (time between network connections) Mine is set to 2 days, so I usually have something between 5 and 10 workunits waiting on each computer. (The amount depends on the benchmark of your computer.) It also has the advantage of having a few workunits on hand in case the server is down. I think the default is something like 0.1 day (maybe).
In that case, you probably wouldn't get another one until the current work is finished. You might set it somewhat higher, and you would then get more downloaded workunits to have on hand.

Downloading a workunit can also be somewhat random as it checks your computer commitment. You don't necessarily get one each time you connect. You can always hit the "update" button, but you still might not get one at that instant. I find that BOINC downloads a workunit when it feels like it.

If you are running multiple projects, you could always set the other projects to "won't get new tasks" so that WCG would be the only one to download anything. If you really get desperate, you could suspend execution of all other projects to force WCG to be the only one running. When the current workunit finishes, I would expect another download to be forced at that point.

If nothing's running and nothing's being downloaded, then you have a REAL problem.

Hello Wild Rover,
My UD agent PCs can connect to the Internet and WCG, but the agent won't upload or download WUs. I thought this problem'd been fixed.

???
Let's get some information about this problem. Are there any messages? What sort of internet connection do you have? What sort of system are you running on? Have you tried reinstalling? How much available memory do you have? Has this system ever worked?

Lawrence

Re: Server problem

My living room computer running UD has also got the 'Agent Paused' message now that it has completed the work unit. This is obviously a server issue on the WCG side. I will report it.

Re: Server problem

Thanks for that Lawrence. 2 Other members of our team who use 56k modems look to be having the same problem.

Re: Server problem

Same problem here for the last 4 hours. If I can get through at all it can take some 10 minutes to get a new unit. The one I'm trying to upload now is taking longer still.

Re: Server problem

See if it works ok now. One of the log files hit the file system size limit and caused a chain of problems. This compounded with the fact the most of the team is traveling made it a bit harder to tend to. Sorry for the disruption. I have hopefully patched this up for now via 14kb dialup modem connection.

Re: Server problem

Gave up last night and shut down 2 of 3 pcs before your fix. Works fine now but one of the restarted machines lost its completed wu and got no credit for it.

Re: Server problem

Wild Rover, over at Grid.Org one gets sort of the scratched record reply like "we dont support UD_Mon.....". This is a free add-on that manages and stores locally as many WU's you'd like to keep on your local drive, in case your WCG connection does not work or the servers having problems like this maxed out log file. It would simply keep the completed unit in a "slot" and wait for the forthcoming opportunity to send, whilst continuing on the next WU.

Now if you'd switch to BOINC, that's all build in AND Supported...store a X hours / days work and it will keep it until the next scheduled connect. Have a think about it and try it out. The front page of WCG gives directions how to get there sleep

There's only one minute downside, which in fact is slowing your machine down!!!!, its the graphical screensaver and gui.....BOINC is just plain vanilla shhh
