I saw a news post about "burn out" working at certain jobs. It was nearly useless.
----------------------------------------The last four months at work have been insane for me. 72+ hours a week (including Saturdays and Sundays). Seemingly impossible requirements to make. Yet, I know that I am not alone. Many of you are going through this as well. You probably even "carry" your work into your dreams at night. I've been though this before, like many of you. Tough? You betcha! I can think of *much* more stressful jobs than mine though. Easily. What do you do? After the last 4 weeks of hitting the "brick wall", I just go back into my routine of not worrying about it. Funny thing is, sometimes you forget what your "routine" should be when you do hit "the brick wall". As long as you know you are trying your best, that's quite good enough. When your work get's tough, it's high time to go "into your safety zone". (waits for a post about "The Safety Dance". LOL!) That could mean many things ... watching funny movies, using "Imagineering" (placing yourself for at least ten minutes in a darkened room, in which you go into "a semi-dream state" where you can be alone where you imagine yourself in a *place* of total peace). I usually can "get" to that "zone" in less than five minutes. Sounds crazy, but someone who knows a lot about "Imagineering" taught this to me years ago. He is well-known. I thought he was nuts at first. Little did I know that he was not. Laugh if you want, but I imagine myself as a Polar Bear on a nice chunk of floating ice in the Artic. No one to bother me. The Sky is sunny. The Wind is warm, and I am feeling great. Well then, what do you do to 'unwind' during hectic and long work weeks? This post has been made without the use of any drugs or alcohol. I am serious. I just got off work 40 minutes ago. ![]() |

Hi Johnny C
----------------------------------------My method would probably be described as sad I now have a tropical fish tank on the end of my desk, at the moment there are a couple of Angel Fish in there. Since deploying this I now have a 4 Foot 250Litre tank in the living room and I'm managing to keep some real nice Blue Cobalt Discus which are truely peaceful and stately. I think the fluorescent lighting and general ambience helps your welbeing on the dark nights we have here in the UK as a plus. My problem is down to the fact that I have too many bosses. They all think I'm working full time for them. I'll be on the 6:55am from Gatwick to Glasgow tomorrow run 3 training sessions flying back Friday and when I get back some unaware individual will probably sack me because I didn't return their call within 5 minutes. My faith supports me greatly I make those podcasts for me really. If they are downloaded by someone else and they get as much from them as I do that's a bonus If I find myself wedged in like a sardine on a London Tube train in the morning with no "personal space" one of my worst nightmares I can be listening to something inspiring from Sunday Morning and I'm back in Church again which for me is your Ice berg. Ah yes. Nice little pickle we're all pretty much in these days. Time was we were emploees, nowadays we're nothing but a commodity easily "interchangable" with any other yahoo in Timbuktoo who just happens to have the same "job title". We're just another expense to be managed. Whether it's driven by fear or greed on the employer's part doesn't really matter. What it really is is a plain lack of respect and decency. "We have to be competitive" they say so they cut back on staff but not on the work. They outsource to folks that are more than willing to take their money but just just enough to not lose the contract. Guess who has to catch all the ******* that falls thru the cracks, gets done wrong or not done at all! Oh and if any of us don't happen to like any of this, well we're clearly not "team players". Odds are too that you've gotten yourself marked for the next round of [insert management euphamism here]. This is all something that has become so prevelent in business these days that it's all but impossible to avoid. Switching jobs is not very likely to help.
----------------------------------------So how do you cope. It seems like the folks that typically cope the best are the ones that "return the favor" - those that don't give a rat's patookus about how they do their job, do their 9-5 time and split. The ones that suffer the most are those that are "old fashioned" - they take pride in their work; see the quality of the work they do as a reflection on who they are as a person; they are professionals; when others need help, they truly try to really help; odds are they are working themselves into an early grave. Coping with this insanity is fraught with failure but the ways are as varied as people are. The trick is finding what works for you. Trouble is, that will change over time so you have to keep finding new ways. What keeps me going in the worst of times is the desire to live long enough to be around when they get their due. That will be a sweet experience. Somehow I wouldn't be at all surprised to find lawyers involved when it does happen. That will be an occasion that I will heartily applaud them for once too! (Yea, I'm probably a tad on the cranky side today - it's not that bad a day ----- yet). |

I solved the problem by buying extra service and retiring early. The nine other people who are now doing PART of what I was working on can now worry about it. Yes, I was overworked and burnt out. They kept piling on the work for the reduced staff and adding management layers. I can now be somewhat farther away when something hits the fan. Contractors are now taking over more and more, but those that might know the answers to their questions are leaving as fast as possible.
----------------------------------------I was also told that I would have to learn 20 new software products to get up to speed in the group I was transferred to just before I went away. My answer was, "maybe not". "Buh-Bye"... I've noticed recently that I don't have migraine headaches any more.
