Re: For those of you working "hectic" and long work days ...

btw I got the calculator out on a 35W 3800+ Dual Core AM2

At least £750 without an OS as I would have to upgrade everything CPU MOBO RAM and GRAPHICS (i'm still AGP)

shock

I'll get writing that letter to Santa now

Re: For those of you working "hectic" and long work days ...

There are plenty of articles pointing out that due to latency and speed mismatches between DDR2 ram and the hypertransport clock, AM2 does not generally speed up computing unless you pay for the most expensive combinations. Eventually, as prices come down it will presumably be worth while, but right now it usually increases the cost of computing compared with the old DDR ram. The on-chip memory controller changes the equation for when to switch from DDR to DDR2 ram to improve performance. AMD is changing over a bit early, perhaps for marketing reasons.

Re: For those of you working "hectic" and long work days ...

Hi Lawrence

I'd heard it the other way around that it was Intel that had jumped in early and now it was the sweet spot for DDR2 with 1066Mhz arriving. The board I have my eye on is the top one on this page http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Socket_AM2_Asus.html

The Asus site is down for maintainance

It has alledged automatic clock skew to get the best out of the RAM and is the board that AMD are sending out to the press to do their demo's.

I've read that only the top of the range AM2's 4800+'s and above are getting the best from the DDR2's potential extra bandwidth.

Still by the time Santa gets in his sleigh it'll all be sorted. This time I'm waiting for version2 of the MOBO's. My original nF2 will only run to 3000+ with a 333Mhz FSB whereas this newer (and very much cheaper board as a result) runs a fine 3200+ with 400Mhz FSB.

I'm loathed to move on up as this PC is sweet but I suspect I'll need to find out about 64Bit computing for my job before too long

Which brings us nicely back to careers

Re: For those of you working "hectic" and long work days ...

Your thoughts on Microsofts latest Window Mobile Adverts please

I don't play Golf, too many divots, but tell me why in the world do you need to edit a spreadsheet at the 9th hole?

As you descend into the bowels of the earth on the London Underground you are baraged with MS's work a little live a little adverts on either side of the escalators. You can read work email while wandering around probably on the way to work - whoohoo I really needed that cheers Microsoft for making me feel guilty for slumping down after a hard days graft and cracking open that bottle of beer

tst I could be editing that Word Document instead.

Nightmare

As if mobiles, text and voicemail wasn't bad enough now you can't even wait for a train without the pressure to be putting together a powerpoint while on the platform

It's an outrage

Johnny C over to you

Dave

Re: For those of you working "hectic" and long work days ...

You cross a geek with a lawyer........and you find this surprising? Clearly, you have yet to yield to the dark side my son. Don't fear it. Let it embrace you. Feel the power as it...... wink

MicroSquash isn't stupid. This is nothing more than excellent marketing to their true target audience. Everyday chattels like you and me are irrelevant to them. To the executive/manager/supervisor who can get that one more drop of blood out of us, now that's someone who matters! At least they picked the golf course. For some reason, I would have expected a more intimate setting in the bedroom.

Sorry, I got to deal with "customer support" telling me how stupid I was to even remotely consider even the possibility that their product could even conceivably be flawed so I'm in one of my moods.
