hellow,
it's not fun when you hear someone of your family has a sort of cancer. Two days agow i heard that they found some cancercells in my granddad's blood (metastases). I'm not seaching for someone who's got compassion, but i just want to know how the HPF can help finding some more information/cures about the cancer deseases, how to understand cancer develops in the human body, because i don't know how cancer cells really can destroy someone's life... maybe someone can help me explain the way these f*cking cells "work"... and how the HPF-project eventually can help best greetings from someone who wants to help everyone with that kind of evil deseases!!! thx |

workel, you and your grandfather have my sympathy.
There are many types of cancer. Rather than try and explain something I don't fully understand, I'll recommend the wikipedia cancer article. The HPF project doesn't have any immediate application to cancer. Really, the HPF project is about understanding exactly how all the cellular processes work in the human body, and will eventually lead to a better understanding of what goes wrong, and how it can be fixed. The results of the HPF project may be used in future cancer research, but I'm not sure exactly how. (Bear in mind that a lot of similar projects claim to be "cancer related" when in fact the link is rather tenuous. HPF have been careful not to misrepresent what they are doing, but they still list cancer as one of the possible diseases to benefit from the research.) The World Community Grid have told us that the next project to be added will be specifically cancer related. We don't know anything more about how the project will work, we just know it will be launched some time in the next few months. |

Workel,
My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer this time last year and given just 3 months expected life span. I empathise with your situation. On the up side my mother underwent chemo and radiotherapy and is still with us today, with minimal pain or suffering and fighting the cancer. 4 or 5 years ago many of the drug therapies that she received would not have been available. This for me is a clear indication that the grid does speed up research, I now have every PC in my house working 24/7, albeit a small contribution. My thoughts are with you and your family, I wish you all the very best. Regards Pete M |

as human beings we exist on this earth as minds riding on biological bodies.
----------------------------------------the biology behind these human bodies and our environment are the most complex systems. I can only say that when I strive to understand this complex biology it is becuase I truely believe it will make all our lives better, and that I think the best way I can contribute to the global effort is to make tools and databases for understanding the proteins that make up the system. with each passing year we solve more and more cansers, but the complexity of nature means that some types of canser (some diseases) will evade our best efforts for some time to come...
