cool HPF2 graphics - please make it cool

Yes, I know that displaying colorful rotating images on the agent UI is just slowing down the calculation algorithm, but… Trying to recruit new members to the WCG, I’ve noticed that for many people, saving the world is great, but having a cool looking screen saver is even better…

I totally agree.

Saving the world is a fine objective for everyone. It is even better when friends can tell that you are succeeding in doing just that. So we need a cool rotating image that advertises our contribution and thus recruits new crunchers.

It might even show some other stats, then just the progress????

Re: HPF2 graphics - please make it cool

Hello MKOSTERV,
I don't know just where we stand on graphics. We want them to attract new members, but I hear that we are still learning the quirks of the BOINC graphics package, so it will be a while before BOINC gets graphics. Just this morning I came across an amazing post on Rosetta@home about their BOINC graphics on the Mac: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=1177#15754
Rhiju found that on his mac a run for a large protein used 150Mb when the graphics was off, but well over 300Mb with the graphics on. We are working to track down why the graphics are taking so much memory.

For comparison, the standard working set of pages for FAAH in Phase 1 was about 95 MB. sick

We want graphics, but there may be a delay while we learn how to program efficiently in the BOINC system.

Hi thom217,
Real soon now. I've got lots of questions that I am sitting on, so don't look to me for answers. We'll find out together.
