Daylight Savings Time

Noticed that the timestamps in forum posts don't reflect DST. When I'm browsing as a guest, times are show in GMT as I recall but if I'm logged in, they reflect my time except for the DST adjustment. Just wondering. No biggie.

Re: Daylight Savings Time

They do? I'm in UTC+1 (BST) so I didn't notice. I can't see a setting for time zone, though - how does the system work that out?

Re: Daylight Savings Time

First, to keithhenry - Right, Daylight Savings Time is not part of the Forum software. Wish it were.

Second, to Didactylos - The Time Zone is hidden. First click on My Forum Profile. That shows you a long list of information, but without a Time Zone. If you then select the first option - Change My Information - you get a similar page to edit but with a drop down menu added to set your time zone. This is a 'feature'. wink

Re: Daylight Savings Time

Ohhhhh. I see. How logical. (Bwahahahaahah etc.)

I have fooled it by setting it to GMT+1, ignoring the irrelevant geographic data.

Why have a setting that the user has to set and can get wrong?

Why does the forum software not just read the Windows setting of Timezone? This must be accessible ase a system variable.

I have looked at my Forum Timezone setting and it is set to GMT UK (which as Didactylos pointed out is wrong anyway), but I am currently at a location which is GMT+8 (BST+7). I have changed my Windows Timezone to suit, but the forum Software still thinks I am in the UK.

Re: Daylight Savings Time

Websites can't access details on your computer. It would be a horrible security risk if they could!

So, all the forum has to go on is information included in the HTTP headers, and any metadata they it can derive from cookies or your IP address.

Re: Daylight Savings Time

Ok. Part of the forum software. WCG has no control over that. So. bottom line is if that really buggers you, twice a year, you go change this setting. If it bugs you that much, you can learn how to change it and have to remember to change it biggrin

Yes, of course. But websites have in the past told me details about my windows settings - some of it essential - current screen reolution - etc - its the kind of info that the security websites delight in telling us - but none of it is private. I would have thought time zone would be on the list. Alternatively, IP address - which is accessible - shows geographical location and hence timezone.

Re: Daylight Savings Time

Things like screen resolution are available through scripting. Small screen devices often also include it in their user agent string, so web designers can send targetted content.

Determining location from IP requires a large geolocation database, and isn't 100% accurate.

But, as it turns out, time zone is also available through scripting. A forum with any sense would just send UTC times, and do the conversion on the client. Yet another indication that mvnForum was not designed with sense in mind. :-S

You also have to know where you are. MOST of the US goes to DST. Indiana has county rules, unless they changed this year. Last year, they sort of didn't go to DST. This year, they sort of DO go to DST. Border counties also can be affected by nearby big city time zones, either EST/EDT or CST/CDT. Arizona doesn't change, except for the Indian reservations, which do. The starting and ending dates for DST have also changed this year.

College Corner OH/West College Corner IN has lots of special rules, depending on which side of the line you are on, which building you are in, which exceptions apply to the opposite sides of the line, and which side of the basketball court you are on (The state line goes through the center of it. The shot clock can get strange if you are shooting from half court, since the ball can be in the air for over an hour.)

You should have already made allowances for the 23:59:60 leap second added between 23:59:59 UTC on Dec. 31 2005 and 00:00:00 UTC on Jan 1, 2006.
