Re: Forced to Remove Agent from Systems

*cough*environment variable*cough*

Will you be altering the UD code to match? That'd be useful. The only problem will be people throttling when they don't need to. Don't make it too easy :-)

Re: Forced to Remove Agent from Systems

It could conceivably be a problem with the screensaver not cleaning up properly, and leaving the process hanging loose. Does this occur only after the screensaver has displayed, or is it happening straight after a reboot?

This sounds right. It seems to me (though I can't be absolutely sure) that I see the problem when I "wake" the machine from the screensaver AND all that the screensaver showed was the words "World Community Grid" -- no actual work being done on a project.

Remember, when UD is working in the background normally, it runs at very (very!) low priority, and shouldn't impact your computer use at all. It is possible that the screensaver runs at a higher priority, and that is causing the slow-down which is reported when this problem occurs. The solution then would be to remove the screensaver (set it to "blank"), and set UD to work all the time. You will still see 100% CPU usage, but your system will be perfectly responsive and healthy. Please let us know if that works, because it will help identify the actual bug here.

I'll give it a try, and let you know what I find.

confused Re: Forced to Remove Agent from Systems

Hello tmcgill,
AND all that the screensaver showed was the words "World Community Grid" -- no actual work being done on a project.

The screensaver that comes with the UD client shows images generated by the application. If for some reason the application is not running, then it shows 'World Community Grid'. So the application is not running on your system. sad

Re: Forced to Remove Agent from Systems

Are you aboslutely sure of that Lawrence? I thought it shows "World Community Grid" text when the screensaver first kicks in and then changes to the normal working WCG graphics a few minutes later.

David.

Re: Forced to Remove Agent from Systems

Hello David,
Picky, picky. You are correct, the application has to go through the setup phase and make a first run through the algorithm before it sets up the data used to generate an image.

But in general - no image means that the application is not running.
