Are they avoiding SETI

My question pertains to the earlier days of the SETI project circa 1998. When all the data has been chewed through will WCG allow our machines to go dormant until the next project comes along or is the WCG going to follow in SETI's footsteps and start piping through redundant data to keep the interest up. My XPS can handle the load but I don't know that my wife will let me live down the electric bill!

Re: Are they avoiding SETI

On all grid projects there will ALWAYS be redundant testing.
They have to run the results more than once (an undisclosed number of times) in an effort to maintain the highest possible accuracy. Keep in mind this IS a science project, and as such demands a pristine lab environment, but here lacking such therefor requires extreme levels of testing.

This is one of the many reasons why a grid operating at 2 TeraFlops is less efficient than a supercomputer operating at 1 TeraFlop.

A supercomputer simply does not require the same level of testing and does not have to find/load/compare from multiple locations.

So to answer your question- On a grid, the work units will always be redundant. It is up to the imagination as to what point the redundency is excessive.

alien 1 Are they avoiding SETI alien 2

Hello danielswjr
Welcome to the Forum!

My question pertains to the earlier days of the SETI project circa 1998. When all the data has been chewed through will WCG allow our machines to go dormant until the next project comes along or is the WCG going to follow in SETI's footsteps and start piping through redundant data to keep the interest up. Great question! There's been 12 PCs running Here (My Home) for a couple
of years now. I have wondered if UD would ever give us "BUSY WORK"
while I crunched on Cancer and then Smallpox.
My Electric bill seems extreme. I just could not accept that they
could or would treat my expenditures simply as "FILLER" between
projects. No! Not!
Here either I just won't go there!.
I hope they have lots more projects WAY before they finish with the
proteome. So it's not an issue no matter what!
praying

I would certainly like to know how many times the Work Units will be processed. I imagine that they leave this detail out because they know that if they need "busy-work" then they could more easily "retest" the Work Units without having to debate on why they are deviating from a given number.
