I love all the stats about how many years CPU & how many CPUS have been contributed to this venture.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to calculate the amount of CO2 generated per CPU year, per million points, or whatever other intriguing milestone you care to choose? This will start with the need to estimate the amount of power consumed in Kwh- so we can derive an actual cost donated by the contribitors. To complete it properly we'll need to know the proportion of non-CO2-generating power .. by country...... (but that's for the real trainspotters) ....you get the idea. I know the idea is to donate "spare" cycles, but I can see that some of you take it far more seriously than that. ![]() |

This year, my heating bill was waaaaaay down. :-) I'm not worried about heating. Cooling on the other hand.... The systems here at home crank out some heat. That's not what I need when it's over 95F outside with high humidity and my AC is running most of the day. Oh... and we have some of the highest electric prices in the US. Yikes! It's not fun having to run the AC in December and January either. To bad my homeowner's association won't allow a windmill in my back yard. -j |

So I decided to answer my own question, thereby providing an opportunity for those who enjoy such sport to find the errors in my maths.
----------------------------------------Starting figures & assumptions: Today's total of 9,139,049,746 points in 39,478.8 yr runtime Using a power consumption of 100w From this: running a PC at 24*365*100w = 876Kwh Just do some Googling to find many references for how much CO2 produced per Kwh of various fuel sources - uses a worst case of 0.97 kg of CO2/Kwh for calculating domestic wastage*. Conclusions
All I need now is an "everyday unit" eg: How many Empire State buildings would it take to weigh 33.6 Pg I wonder? ======================================== One Terra watt is 10**12 watts : or a 1 followed by 12 zeros/ Peta is 10**15 *Inevitably the proportion of fuel sources and efficiency of production will vary across different countries. Okay then.
The US national average is 0.63 kg per kWh. I'm guessing that's close to the worst case internationally. Just taking coal is probably unfair. Coal has always accounted for just under half of the electricity produced worldwide. And just to put it into perspective: 100W is the same as a humble lightbulb. (Switch to energy saving bulbs!) But the real killer for your calculation is WCG is designed to run while your computer would be on normally. Someone else calculated the increased power usage of WCG as truly negligible. |

to put into perspective
----------------------------------------My 3200+ uses 16.4 more watts per hour crunching than it would if it was just twiddling it's thumbs not doing anything useful like potentially saving lives. My Seasonic PSU is around 80% efficient so a further 20% is consumed 19.68 Watts producing 3.447 GFlops of number crunching for the grid. My processor is fairly old now and much more efficient designs are being used on the grid today. AMD's new 3800+ on socket AM2 will when it arrives next month run 35W flat out with dual cores whereas my processor takes 78W flat out. So my extra consumption per day on account of the crunching on this processor is 472W --- On the flip side of this I can now work from home on occasions with all of this technology so I no longer need to burn up the 27 litres of fuel just getting to work and back in a day (63Kg's saved right off the bat), the countryside doesn't need to be chopped down for new roads, my car won't need replacing so soon and not as much space needs to be provided in a fully air conditioned office far away. Just a thought,
----------------------------------------200 years ago the human species were useing beasts of burden and the wind for our energy needs. Then came; Coal, crude oil, nuclear and right now we are pushing hard into Hydrogen, Solar, Wind, and Fuel Cells as a renewable clean power source. I see this century as the one in which we clean things up and moving on to address the six million a month increase in world population we have been experiencing for a number of years now.
