Life in the colonies can be daunting, a little ingenuity is required if one wants to keep up.
WiFi is catching on here. For example, there is talk here in Calgary of making the entire downtown area WiFi, 100% coverage indoors as well as out. In stark contrast, I have friends living on an acreage 10 minutes outside the city corporate limits where broadband is still not available. They were on 28.8K dial-up Internet until 2 years ago and now have 56K dial up. The population density just can't support anything more. -- |

Graham,
Isn't it a small world after all. I live in the SE, in Albert Park, 1 block east of the Max Bell Arena and about 2 blocks south of the junction of Memorial Drive and Barlow Trail. Looking west, I have a magnificent view of downtown with the Rocky Mts. set in the background. Lethbridge is my hometown but I moved from there on completing my B.Ed. I've been in Calgary for 26 years and can think of no better place to be. My daughter on the other hand loves the UK and we cannot get her back. When did you leave Calgary? -- |

Hi DagorathI moved to Calgary in 1979 and lived there till 1987 I moved to Vancoover in 1987 and lived there for a year I moved back to Calgary in 1988, as I missed my friends and my Hockey Team A wise decision, as I was there to attend the playoffs at the Saddledome Calgary beat Montreal in six games, winning the deciding sixth game at the Montreal Forum, the first team to do so. Defenseman Al MacInnis earned the Conn Smythe Trophy enjoying a 17-game scoring streak and totaling a league-best 31 points in the playoffs. Goaltender Mike Vernon won all 16 games for Calgary, becoming only the second player to accomplish that feat after Grant Fuhr. Boy was that ever a celebrationAlso I got to go to the Calgary Winter Olympics I spent most of my Winter weekends up in Lake Louise skiing and most of my Summer weekends at the Glenco Country Club playing Golf What a refreshing City and such wonderful friendly people I had a few hangovers from some pretty wild nights in the bars on Electric Avenue I lived up in Strathcona at the top of Bow Trail, just across Sarcee Trail, before I moved back to the UK in 1997 Here is a couple of picture of the house that I used to own ![]() |

Graham,
You were here during what we now refer to as Calgary's lean years. The economy has been white hot for the past 4 years, growth has been absolutely phenomenal. I would estimate the present value of your house to be in the neighborhood of $400K or more. Deerfoot Trail now moves along at 40 kph during rush hour, too many cars. 16th Avenue will soon be 3 lanes minimum through the core, big property buy out and widening, The Brick on 16th and Centre is gone. 88 was a golden year though, one you'll never forget, nor will I. The Flames, the Olympics, oh yes, it was good. Lake Louise, my second home. This is the first year I have not had a season pass, my knees just can't take it anymore. Electric Avenue isn't quite what it used to be. It got to be just a little too rowdy for some folks so city council has brought pressure to bear in the right places to quiet it down. Now it's known as The Red Mile because that's where everybody goes to watch the Flames on TV. There have been some huge parties there following big victorys. No matter where you go in Calgary today you will see Help Wanted signs posted. Nobody has enough staff, business is booming as it was back in the 70s. |

So if you see an item on the news about train halted by insane number cruncher That'll be me Dave Lol, a train car in flames in the background, cops carrying off a man clutching a laptop tight to his chest, kicking, screaming "but I have a WU 99.5% complete, I demand a cell with a plug in, my battery is flat, I want my points, AAAIIIIEEEEEE, I am battling disease don't you know" --- |
