couldnt we try to "crunch" a specific disease in a manner like we did with the proteomes on the genome and then try and engineer a "disease" that feeds only the diseased cells (a disease that can only eat diseases : if there arent any to eat then it starves and dies).
Also it was drawn to my attention with a previous suggestion of mine that there are not many bio engineers here to contact. I was wondering if there were any reliable links to some. |

Hello Shinobi Gaiden,
We are working on the outer edge of science right now, so you can see where the boundary is. We are running HPF to predict approximate protein structures for proteins without a known structure. This will be one additional datum used while trying to figure out which other proteins the unknown protein interacts with. The ultimate goal is to identify the functional networks of interacting proteins within a cell. We are running FightAIDS@Home using the brand new AutoDock 4.0 program to try to calculate how 2 proteins of known structure will dock (bind) to each other without going through expensive lab measurements. This is still a cutting edge program, not a routine computation. A lot of money has already been spent to measure the protein structures accurately. We shall soon be running HPF2 to attempt to calculate an accurate structure for a protein without going through expensive and tedious lab measurements. With an accurate structure, it is possible to attempt to calculate the interaction with another protein. To design a new organism on the computer all 3 of our projects would have to be routine and well understood problems, not at the very borders of scientific progress the way they actually are. Shinobi Gaiden, you have a lot of ideas. I think, if you want to discuss them seriously, you need to go and talk to some scientists. Don't expect them to come here: there are already perfectly good communication channels between scientists, and WCG is providing a computational resource, not an ideas factory.
A lot of academic discussion is restricted to conferences and closed academic forums. You might be best starting somewhere like here. If you want to make a real impact, get a qualification in molecular cell biology, and start working in the field yourself. Just be prepared to have many of your ideas shot down as impractical, impossible or dangerous. I'm sure you have more ideas, and one of them may be the breakthrough we are looking for. |
