cool Developement of molecular computer = greatest goal!

Sure sequencing the genome and discovering more potent cancer and aids drugs are very important tasks, but if we were to focus on developing a molecular computer(an affordable one) then it would be possible via the grid to solve 99% of the worlds other problems within a year(thats a guess).

Step 1: Find the best molecules for a molecular computer.

Step 2: Design a molecular computer using evolutionary algorthims.

Step 3: Create the computer in an actual lab.

Step 4: Ramp up production.

I too, can pluck figures from the air. What on earth makes you think a "molecular computer" is such a panacea?

Life doesn't work like that. Sorry.

Anyway, you're talking to the wrong people. You need to find a group already working in this field, offer them your support, and suggest they may be able to apply for computing time at WCG.

Re: Developement of molecular computer = greatest goal!

Its all a rough estimate of course... but many scientists believe that a molecular computer would be capable of besting the fastest super computer in the world in the size of a sugar cube. Extrapolating that to the WGC you could imagine the potential computing power of a million linked molecular super computers.

You may think that idea is a "fantasy" or not realistic, however the gears are already turning in major labs... I was just thinking about how we might possibly expedite the process.

The closest project is Nano-Hive@home, but they have yet to start and I believe their focus is more generalized and deals with molecular machines. Unfortunatly there aren't any projects directed specifically at a molecular computer.

BTW, I was exaggerating on the amount of problems that could be solved... I was just trying to get the point across. I will see if Nano-Hive has any plans for a MC.

I think D is right, someone would have to make a specific project proposal for this site.
