Already a BOINC user? How about ...

How about info on your "Join Us" for those who are not *yet* a Member of WCG *and* is also not a Boinc user yet?

A friend of mine called and asked me how to do this. He wants to run Boinc and join WCG. I emailed him instructions (pieced together from Boinc and here at the WCG).

I hope I got it right. laughing

Also, if I am not mistaken, what cpu's would most benefit from using Boinc? He has several PC's ranging from AMD 2800+ to an AMD Dual core.

I was hoping that there was a 'sticky' in this forum, so I could just email my friend "the real" way to finding Crunching Glory. wink

Edit: Basically, I had emailed the following:

Go to:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

Then read where it says:
Download and run BOINC software
Enter the project's URL (visit the project's web site, and copy the URL from your browser's address field).
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

After you get the download and run Boinc (at the Boinc website), you will see this url there:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

Get the Windows version:

5.2.13 Recommended version Download (10.55 MB) Instructions: Windows installer version details
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

Our "join our team' url at WCG:

Yes, you're right - the information about BOINC is just a huge heap of links, and the official help pages haven't been updated since before FAAH was released.

Your instructions are kind of confusing (they confused me, and I knew what you were trying to say!) Here's my attempt:

If you have BOINC installed already, check that you are running the latest version (5.2.13). If you need to install or upgrade BOINC, go to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php to get the latest version.

When the installation is complete, you will need the World Community Grid project URL. This is www.worldcommunitygrid.org

If you are not a WCG member, register here. If you are already a member, get your BOINC account key here.

I think this covers all platforms and all possible paths to BOINC. It will need updating with the next BOINC release, of course, since the account key will no longer be required.

Re: Already a BOINC user? How about ...

All you need to do is tell your friend to go to this page:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/viewRegister.do?platform=all

After they register with World Community Grid it will take them to a page where they can download the appropriate BOINC client (windows or linux). Once they pick which BOINC client to download, then the Berkeley download page is opened and the page behind it displays installation instructions.

Please note that if you are already logged into the site, you will go straight to the download page.

We are planning a redesign of these pages to cut the number of pages in the process in half.

Didactylos, as an IT Recruiter who understands GUI Developers and UI and Human Factors folks, I had to laugh when I re-read my email to my friend.

I was thinking, who in Hades sent those instructions? LOL!

knreed, thank you! wink
