My 'device installations' count shown under 'Miscellaneous' under 'Detailed Statistics is not correct.
I had to re-install the software on a PC and now the count shows more devices than I really have. Does this matter? Is there a way to fix it? |

When you reregistered, I assume that you gave the new device a new name. You can have as many devices as you want for the same member name.
----------------------------------------I lost some devices on a computer that crashed. For historical purposes no devices can be deleted. I just renamed them OLD_whatever so I would know I would not need to mess with them. CAUTION: You may have extra devices listed, but it is not a problem. Make sure that you check all devices in the device manager ever registered to make sure that all device names are different/unique, especially if you have a lot of devices. Two devices with the same name can cause a problem when data is returned.

Doesn't WCG use its own unique number to identify a device (or instances of a device) anyway? This is necessary since two users may use the same name for a device.
----------------------------------------I now have 3 devices listed with the same name. They are all the same physical machine. I registered the first, then later I registered it again after reinstalling windows. Then I switched to running BOINC, and the device got registered as a BOINC device. WCG stats treat all these as different devices, and it does not take any notice of my name for them. This is probably the best and safest way to handle this situation. It all seems to work ok, my points are allocated to the latest instance of the machine. Each instance is identifiable by date, but renaming the old instance may help, and now someone has suggested it I think I will. Maybe someone from WCG can confirm that duplicate device names are not an issue? ![]() |

Hello Dirk Gently,
Confirmed. A unique ID number is created when the installation program contacts the server. If you try to clone your installation by copying the WCG directory to another computer, it will lead to trouble because the server will think that the same device is misbehaving, asking for one work unit then sending back the result of another. So it will think that there is something wrong with the computers using that ID number. There was a time (perhaps still is) when the very similar UD installation at grid.org required unique humanly-readable device names to avoid this problem. It is still a good idea to assign distinctive device names in order to avoid confusing humans. Lawrence |
