angry A model of Perfection and Plastic

My experience on this project to find better treatments for HIV among other projects has taught me a few things about our current world and HUMAN NATURE in general.

One of the things i have found while trying to get career minded women to run this project is the response....is "eeewwwww", like i just asked them to have sex with a dog! Career minded women make up 60% of the work force here.

I have investigated and tried to get to the bottom of why nobody wants to help find cures for HIV and CANCER. It turns out that GOD created everything that exists and everything is therefore PERFECT. This view is extremely popular among the women i know. The few guys friend i do have share my points of view mostly.

The attitude seems to be that if someone is disabled, sick or otherwise unwell then it surely must be their own FAULT and doing after all..we live in a PERFECT WORLD where all is FAIR, JUST and GOOD.

I have myself been judged on that model of perfection. No women here in Albuquerque,NM wants me and gives the error that i'm either "to short","to old","to young","to scrawny", "not their type" or otherwise talk about what they don't want to hear or know and i don't make them laugh enough.

I would appreciate it if anyone else can give me their input in relation to my views on this project on the world as we i know it. Anyone else share my frustrations with human nature and condition?

And if this is normal then how are we suppose to cure a world that doensn't want to acknowledge that anything is wrong?

..hope i don't get banned for this post..just venting some frustration!

signing people up for this is a delicate task, that's for sure! you almost have to be at their place and install it for them without explaining much smile

If someone has unprotected sex and gets AIDS well you can say that it is their fault. However, for the children born in Africa whose mother or father has AIDS then how can you blame the kid. It is the person who brought him to this world that has the disease. He/she did nothing to get it.

Maybe you can try passing this link to the people who refuse to run the software.

The word you are searching for is "selfish". Many people just don't want to know. Perhaps they are too lazy to find out; perhaps they prefer to live life in a bubble. Perhaps they have genuine concerns about running grid software; perhaps they are heartlessly indifferent to the suffering of others.

Fortunately, my team mates are as moral and informed as I am, and all I had to do was explain honestly the risks and benefits of World Community Grid. It worked for me. :-D

Well, glad to see I'm not only person who has these experiences and feels this way. But, yet even more sad at the same time.

Everyone down here in New Mexico only seems to care about their FAMILY..they are really big on that here..the "extended family" structure. Often times they say screw anyone else because they only care about their FAMILY and FRIENDS and their immediate wants, desires, needs and concerns in life.

I don't think they have any sympathy for the millions of children dying in Africa or even want to think about it. I don't think they believe it could ever happen them or anyone they love and care about.

Re: A model of Perfection and Plastic

Bring it closer to home. I know it's a little callous, but projects like the Human Proteome Folding Project benefit many diseases. If none of your friends or family are dying of AIDS, I'm sure you can find a way to make it more personal without looking too far afield.

I know many people here are crunching in memory of a loved one, or in the hope that a cure can be found before it is too late. Some people don't need the big picture. Personal reasons are perfectly valid, and very powerful.

Until something incurable with present technology makes a vist close to thier home. Then it's a desperate plea to the Medical Doctor to do something. And all he can say is this person is very sick and all we have is this hormone which actually works for 1 in a hundred cases. To try to arrest the disease.

True story BTW.

Not only that, but needles, "bad luck" at the hospital. Something like blood transfusion... Or even some twisted mind who wishes to give it back to someone else because he has been cheated... figures.

However, when the cure will be found (which I believe) this world community grid might become the best way to find cure after that.

Just for example the bird flu thing (not sure how to spell it)... might ends up here.
