I don't have a support issue but a question related to the global statistics. We are seeing a very nice, steady increase in the number of members and devices joining WCG but our overall daily production seems to have been been stuck at a plateau for a while. Does this mean that there are about as many members and devices no longer participating as are joining? Is there any way to measure the attrition rate (perhaps devices that haven't reported in the last 1,000 hours or something...)?

Is there any way to measure the attrition rate (perhaps devices that haven't reported in the last 1,000 hours or something...)? That would be tough to do. That's more than a month, but would it be far enough back? After all, my slowest computer only sends something in every 8 days. Many Europeans disappear for a three month "holiday" and then start up again.Devices are a lot more arbitrary. I lost a few due to a computer crash. Current devices are set to hold enough data for 5-7 days of crunching. I have 4 computers with 4, 27, 30 and 30 devices, but only 4 devices are active at any one time. It shows 103 in my profile. Part-time members also make the statistics gathering inaccurate. Everyone isn't running 24/7. One 24/7 member would be the same as 12 two hour members. Many may be bored. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think you will see another jump when some new projects come online, especially from different scientific areas of expertise or sponsors. The AIDS project brought in a lot. WCG has a lot of unused server capacity. Bring 'em on.

This URL computes the equivalent number of 24 hour active CPUs from the statistics: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/DCcomparison.html

i also favor keeping a tight control on reports of the number of active computers.
----------------------------------------perhaps '# of computers that have sent results within last 30 days' is close enough. i have seen too much loss of credibility and communication at other projects. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 10, 2006 3:55:50 AM] |

I guess that is my fear, that we are quick to point out how many "members" we have but it is a bit misleading because there obviously are quite a few who are not active for one reason or another.
Along the same line, I belong to a small team with many members who haven't reported in over 10,000 hours. There is no way to know if they have transferred to other teams or just dropped out. They are however, still recorded as team members that haven't reported and I don't think it looks good on the team record... |

They are shown as "retired" if they have switched to another team. I'm afraid yours must have just lost interest.

Didactylos . . .
Yes, but the thing is: the person may have in fact retired or lost interest and did so without leaving notice. WCGrid sees only the data or lack of it, but the reality may be different. |

andzgrid, I was explaining the difference between leaving a team for another, and just losing interest.

If they are on your team you should be able to click on their name and see when the last result was returned

Yes, you are right. And what I find is that many of them have not reported in several thousand hours, some well over 10,000 hours. One person has not made a single return but has been a member of the team for over a year. I don't think it is right to consider them a member of the team or a contributer to WCG.
