Hey guys - did I show you this recent photo? This was outside the front door at my parent's house. It was only a few inches in span and my wimpy (now UK based) kids nearly died when they saw it.

How the heck do you filter out spider 'red eye'?!

Matt --
Your kids aren't the only wimps about spiders. I would jump right out of my skin seeing a monster like that!

He hee - actually I hate the darn things myself. Brrr ! And I am the one who always has to take them about 5 miles away from wherever we happen to be staying at the time.

Snakes and lizards I find are really cool and have always enjoyed handling them. I am not sure I could even pick up a tarantula...

smile Great to see you posting again Dave and really hope this means that you are on the mend. How's things going? smile

p.s. Here is something a little cuter. A sugar possum (I think). We were staying in a fantastic little caravan park (in a nice on-site cabin) right on the beach front. Brilliant facilities basically in the middle of nowhere (southern NSW coast). Partly in a national park, we were surrounded by fauna and flora.

I hand-fed the possum a banana, which was clearly a big hit. The slurping noises were deafening!

Well, there's the interesting question of perspective. Is that a window ledge it's sitting on? The "monster" may only be a couple of inches long. What will really test your mettle with a creature like that is not their appearance but how they feel walking up your arm. All those little hairs they have on their legs can feel quite interesting. Now having a half dozen snakes hanging on you neck, shoulders and arms is just as unique an experience. Not because they feel cold and clammy without the wetness but from the reactions you get from other humans. biggrin biggrin biggrin

Good point. It was a 6" x 4" veranda post. The green bit you can see is a corner of a square down-pipe. It wasn’t the biggest one I have seen by a long shot - perhaps just a bit larger than a packet of cigarettes?

Matt --

I am getting better. My foot is still swollen quite a bit, though. Thought you might like to see a critter I came across a few years back in the Great Smokey Mountains in the far western part of North Carolina. It is a rather small black bear that you see about 25 feet off the side of the road. I would guess it was probably either a young adult or a cub from the size of it. Needless to say, I did not hand feed it -- LOL. I have camped there several times and had bear come through my campsite looking for food. You always want to lock up your food where they cannot get at it -- never in your tent! They will pretty much keep to themselves unless you try to feed them or if you get between a female and her cubs.

You Aussies can't do anything halfway, can you? laughing You just don't see any point of having a spider that's the size of a ladybug! Reminds me of the Texan visiting an Aussie's ranch out in the Outback. During a show of the spread, the Aussie would explain how big the ranch was, how much livestock they had, etc. Each time, the Texan always topped it with the same stat about his ranch back in Texas. The Aussie was getting annoyed at this when a kangaroo went bounding by. Startled, the Texan exclaimed "What the heck was that???" Seems the Texan had never seen or heard of one before. The Aussie calmly replied, "You mean you don't have grasshoppers back in Texas?" biggrin

The Texan said that if he started early in the morning, it would take all day to drive around his ranch. The Kentucky hillbilly said, "yeah, I had a truck like that once. I got rid of it, though."
