Should I change UD to BONIC?

Is BONIC better than UD's Grid MP?
I am using Windows and I found that it can run BONIC instead of UD's on windows.
So, I would like to ask which one would be better?
light weight? or can even faster?

Beside, would BONIC/UD use SSE 1,2,3/3DNow?

Re: Should I change UD to BOINC?

Hello Hoplite,
UD is easier to install.

BOINC offers more options. These are:
1) easy access to other distributed computer projects.
2) multi-processor support.
3) easier built-in work unit caching.
4) easier installation as a service.

Currently, UD has excellent built-in compression, but BOINC leaves compression to be implemented by each project. As far as I know, we have not implemented it yet.

BOINC is an ambitious system that is being upgraded and debugged rapidly, but UD is simple and more polished. I like 'easy', so I am sticking with UD for the moment. Right now there is a bug in BOINC that sometimes strikes unless you choose 'Leave in memory when preempted'. Once that bug is fixed and compression is standardized, I will reconsider.

how about the usage of SSE/3DNow?

This is a function of the science application rather than the distributed computing client. From what I have gathered from Rick Alther's posts, perhaps incorrectly, the current science applications were not written with the streaming instructions in mind and converting them to make good use of these instructions would be non-trivial (ie more than just a compile time switch).

Re: Should I change UD to BOINC?

Thank You smile

There are some grid computer make use of SSE/3DNow and claim that it helps to improve the performance about 4 times cool .
They are even trying to use the processing power of the GPU which can improve the overall performance by 40x, depends on the GPU type.

Addressing the question of UD to BOINC? Everyone has a slightly different slant on it. I like mycrofth's analysis of it and think he is correct on all points. I have converted most of my machines to BOINC. If you want to convert there are instructions here

In either case, You are helping make a difference! smile

Re: Should I change UD to BONIC?

I gave up on BOINC because I put in a new release and it did not work for long enough to find out whether it worked at all. So when I discovered WCG through IBM I came here. This sufferer would say don't touch it with a long pole!

Re: Should I change UD to BONIC?

Robert. Please understand that you can run the UD agent or the BOINC agent here at the WCG. With either agent, you can work on either project (HPF or FAAH).

We have tens of thousands of people running on each of them successfully. Of course there are glitches with anything and the UD agent is older and as such probably a little more stable. On the other hand, many more people are using BOINC if you look at all grid projects on the two most prevalent operating systems (LINUX and Windows).

Most people that have been around for a while have preferences towards one or the other.

I still run both agents on differnt machines but after 5 and 6 years running the UD agent both here and over at Grid.org (before I got disgusted with them in December of 04), I am leaning more and more towards BOINC.

Still both work well and contribute greatly to the cause. It is considerably more work for WCG but it is great that we have a choice of agents.

Regards.

Re: Should I change UD to BONIC?

I started with UD 2 months ago and now I completely switched to BOINC. Reasons: support for multi-proccessor systems and support for hyperthreading. Makes a big difference on newer hardware.
