how can i distribute the ud agent or boinc agent to multiple machines silently and preferably without them showing up on the taskbar when the agents are running. i work at a college where we have the ability through our domain controller to roll out pacakges remotely.

First off, you must have permission to install WCG on any computer that you do not own. Instructions for installing the UD client as a service are given here: http://www.unofficialworldcommunitygrid.com/service.shtml I believe that it can also be run as a Scheduled Task, though I have never tried it.
BOINC is easier to install as a service. You can read about that in the Unofficial Wiki at http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Main_Page There is an ongoing thread discussing bulk deployment of BOINC. I've been struggeling for a few days to install BOINC silently to multiple machines in my office. It proved to be a minor problem I was facing and it's solved now.
----------------------------------------If you follow the link to mycrofth's post, and go to the discussion, you will be able to automatically deploy BOINC onto several machines. Even I could do it!  With a little help of member "The Lazy Slug" of course.The explanation is for Windows SBS 2003. I don't know if Windows Server 2000/2003 is very different from this.   |

If you follow the info on the thread mycrofth and depriens mentioned, you'll have to create the BOINC security group directly in Active Directories, and make sure that the GPO created is in such a place that it is above the 'Computer' OU in the Group Policy hieracy. I have a few computer labs that have identical images. Can I include this in an image and have it work on all machines or do I need to change the agent name on each machine?

The Lazy Slug is the real expert, not me. As far as I know, you do not have to create original names for each installation. A unique ID number is created when each device first accesses the server, which keeps things orderly. Lawrence |

If you use the UD Agent, register it with the WCG servers and then do your imaging thing, you'll find you'll have to reregister each workstation individually. (Even using identical specification workstaions with the same computer name, etc will cause a problem after a few days.) BOINC does have the edge over the UD Agent when it comes to deployment as providing you don't let it run, it will automatically register as lawrencehardin has pointed out. In your case I would suggest that you install BOINC on your 'image' machine as a service, join the WCG, stop BOINC, delete all of the work sub folders in the BOINC directory and all of the XML files EXCEPT for account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml and then create the image.
